Latino/Latin American Studies Reports

Immigration issues have once again assumed center stage in policy circles at every level of government in the United States, as the number of new immigrants, many undocumented and many from Latin American nations, has risen markedly in recent years. This is certainly true in Nebraska. According to US Census figures for 2000, the total immigrant population in Nebraska was estimated to be 74,638. By 2006, this figure had risen to 99,500, a 33.3 percent increase. By comparison, the total native-born population in the state grew less than 2.0 percent over the same six-year period.

It has been a brutal week as Americans have watched helplessly as the stock market went into freefall. Those with 401K’s tried to joke about not retiring until they’re in their eighties. Pensions were drying up. Bailout and rescue plans were passed without any impact. No one really seemed to have any idea of how to stop the hemorrhaging. The entire country was beginning to resemble a deer caught in the headlights.

Mary Boadu was born in Koumase, the Ashanti region of Ghana in 1988. At the time of the interview, was a student at Columbia University. When she was three years old, Mary’s mother got the chance to work in a nursing home in the United States, and she left her family in Ghana. This collection contains Edens' unpublished theses related to agriculture pedagogy (1930) and the development of the national farm loan associations in Warren County, Kentucky (1937), as well as a paper on the development and amenities of Bowling Green, Kentucky (1937). The collection also contains scrapbooks about Edens' work as an agricultural advisor in Saudi Arabia (1952), Indonesia (1956), and South Africa (1958). Also included are Edens' master's and doctorate diplomas from Cornell University.

Chang caught up to talk about Chang’s newly released book,Factory Girls: From Village to City in a Changing China. Correlates Of Mathematics Achievement In Developed And Developing Countries: An Hlm Analysis Of Timss 2003 Eighth-Grade Mathematics Scores, Ha T. Phan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using eighth-grade mathematics scores from TIMSS 2003, a large-scale international achievement assessment database, this study investigated correlates of math achievement in two developed countries, Canada and the United States and two developing countries, Egypt and South Africa. Variation in math achievement within and between schools for individual countries was accounted for by a series of two-level HLM models. Specifically, there were five sets of HLM models representing student background, home resources, instructional practices, teacher background, and school background related factors. Into The Imagined Forest: A 2000-Year Retrospective Of The German Woods, Richard Hacken

In a "House of Learning" lecture in the Harold B. Lee Library in October, 2008, Richard Hacken gave this presentation, a combination of text and images. Coming from the history of ideas, this retrospective of the German woods looked at historical, linguistic, artistic, philosophical, political, literary, cultural, and of course botanical aspects of the German forest. In summary, five major forest themes arise from Germans imagining their own German woods: (1) taming the external and internal wilderness; (2) establishing social justice; (3) advocating national unity; (4) maintaining a sense of the sacred; and (5) encouraging ecological awareness.
