The Blade Against The Burden: The Iconography Of The Sword In The Lord Of The Rings, Michael J. Brisbois

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Invites us to consider the deeper social implications of carrying and using a sword in the medieval world of Middle-earth—how bearing a sword not only indicates leadership and service, but provides an opportunity for social mobility, in addition to its more obvious military meanings. Considers as examples Merry and Pippin swearing oaths to, respectively, Théoden and Denethor; Éowyn’s heroic deeds; and especially Aragorn’s use of Narsil/Andúril as a symbol of legitimacy and service to his people.

The Art in Medicine: On the Fabric of the Human Body exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, and sponsored by the New Mexico Health Historical Collection at UNM’s Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, highlighted the 1543 anatomy book De Humani Corporis Fabrica by Andreas Vesalius. This Renaissance work united artistic innovation with anatomical science, contributing to advances in medicine. The exhibit offered a glimpse into the intersection of art and medicine during the Renaissance and was accompanied by a suggested reading list and public programming. Reconstructing Arda: Of Fëanor And The Unchaining Of Melkor, Douglas C. Kane

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Discusses Tolkien’s Silmarillion and how it was constructed from the materials later published in the twelve-volume History of Middle-earth, in particular the version of “Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor” in the published Silmarillion compared with the source material given in Morgoth’s Ring. The author finds intriguing patterns in what Christopher Tolkien used and did not use from the original material.

Close reading of the two riddle games in The Hobbit—the first between Bilbo and Gollum, and the second a three-sided game where both Smaug and the reader try to decode Bilbo’s riddling self-references. Discusses “priming” in riddling, how riddles work as a speech act, and the sources of riddles used in these games. Includes a translation of Bilbo’s riddles to Smaug into Old English.

Considers Frodo’s psychological isolation in The Lord of the Rings and offers a perspective on Frodo and post-traumatic stress syndrome, looking closely at what was happening to him during his quest rather than after and using current understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse to provide a framework for understanding his experiences and reactions.

Public Opinion And The Introduction Of Congressional Environmental Legislation, 1973-2002, Hugh Eugene Jarvis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between public opinion about the environment and the introduction of congressional legislation on environmental issues. Using public opinion data gathered by the General Social Survey from 1977 to 2002, this work examines correlations between how the public views the environment in each and the number of bills introduced in the U.S. House and Senate addressing environmental issues. The findings indicate that there is a correlation between overall concern felt in the public and congressional action on certain aspects of environmental protection. Emergency contraception is a safe and effective form of contraception that is 75%-89% effective in preventing pregnancies within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraception is a type of hormonal contraception, containing high doses of estrogen and progestin (ethinyl estradiol plus levonorgestrel) or progestin only (levonorgestrel). Wider access to emergency contraception has the potential to decrease the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions in the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously denied any over-the-counter (OTC) access to emergency contraception and only recently approved it for OTC status for women 18 years old and over; therefore, pharmacists continue …

Porfirio Rico was born in Jéruco Michoacán, México on September 14, 1914. He attended school until the second grade when Porfirio was taken out of school so he could learn to tend to animals and do housework and light field work. When he was about 10 or 11 years old, Porfirio worked with his grandfather, earning $.15 cents an hour. Porfirio worked in various places such as Morelia, Irapuato Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes in México. Porfirio heard about the Bracero Program and decided to give it a try because the work in México was becoming very hard to come by. When …
