In the field of Christian higher education, some educators are more concerned with marketing their programs to nontraditional students, the fastest growing segment of new enrollments. Although many view that as a blessing, the issues of mission and specifically spirituality are of concern to educators and administrators who want to avoid the secularization already impacting many fine schools in the country. In Japanese high art, popular art (such as comic books and animation), theater, and music, representation of gender is a blurred line that is commonly crossed, more so than in the West. I argue that this fluidity is the result of disparate artistic sources that have filtered through Japanese culture since the Edo Period (1603-1867) with the flourishing of Kabuki Theater (in which men played women on stage) and the emergence of ukiyo-e (particularly shunga/erotica prints). An Exploration Of Local Smart Growth Initiatives Within The United States, William Patrick Bryant

This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of smart growth policy mechanisms available to local governments within the United States. It begins with a description a sprawl, including its causes, impacts, and effects on society. The thesis then transitions to a discussion of the smart growth philosophy, including a definition of smart growth, a discourse debunking common smart growth myths, and an explanation of the economic benefits resulting from smart growth implementation. The discussion concludes with recommendations and examples of specific smart growth techniques that local governments can adopt in pursuit of a smart growth planning agenda.

Acetylcholinesterase In The Sea Urchin Lytechinus Variegatus : Characterization And Developmental Expression In Larvae, Natalie A. Jennings

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in a deuterostome invertebrate, the echinoid Lytechinus variegatus, has been characterized. Kinetic parameters Vmax, Km, Kss, and b were 453 ± 183 μM ATCh hydrolyzed/minute, 185 ± 11 μM, 308 ± 100 mM, and 0.2, respectively for the substrate acetylthiocholine (ATCh) and 3.1 ± 1.2 μM BTCh hydrolyzed/minute, 654 ± 424 μM, 36 ± 31 mM, and 0.6, respectively for substrate butyrylthiocholine (BTCh). Pharmacologic analyses were performed with four inhibitors of cholinesterases, physostigmine, BW284c51, ethopropazine, and iso-OMPA, and yielded IC50 values of 106 ± 4 nM, 718 ± 118 nM, 2.57 ± 0.6 mM, and > 0.0300 M, respectively. …

Small Lytechinus variegatus were collected in October 2004 from Port St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, FL (30° N, 85.5° W) and transported to the Texas A&M Shrimp Mariculture Facility in Port Aransas, TX. Subadult sea urchins were held individually in 25 cm x 10 cm diameter cylindrical cages and were fed semi-purified formulated feeds containing 0.55, 1.1, or 2.4 mg Se/kg feed for 12 weeks (n = 16 individuals per feed treatment, 13.67 ± 0.20 SE g initial wet weight, 30.12 ± 0.15 SE mm diameter; 32 ± 2 ppt salinity and 22 ± 1 C). Viewers were introduced not only to the Dia Art Foundation’s collection of major works from the 1960s to the present but also to a very different type of museum facility. With the help of a multi-million dollar face lift, this once industrial Nabisco factory became an ideal space for art installations. The galleries of Dia:Beacon were specifically designed to accommodate the Foundation’s large-scale collection. This paper re-considers the Southern Culture of Honor and Violence thesis that has enjoyed prevalence in the literature since the first half of the 20th century. The bulk of researchers previously investigating the link among Southernness, culture of honor, and violence have used attitudinal measures of violence, where survey respondents indicated only their preferences and opinions toward engaging in hypothesized violence. The research in this project employs a behavioral measure of violence, and improves upon prior research by measuring actual violent behaviors of respondents with a national survey of defensive gun use (DGU). Adolescents with mobility limitations may be at increased risk of certain adverse outcomes because of unique or exacerbated pre-existing challenges. The current study examined the relationships among mobility limitations, depressive symptomatology, and suicidal behaviors. Moreover, it was examined if pain and perceived social support mod-erated the relationships between severity of mobility limitations and the three outcome variables, and whether depressive symptomatology mediated the relationships between mobility limitations and suicidal behaviors. Secondary analyses of the AddHealth data set were performed. The sample was 49.18% female, 16.02% African-American, 65.46% Caucasian, 12.20% Hispanic, and 6.33% coded as Other. This thesis is devoted to solve fuzzy optimization problems using Monte Carlo methods. In the ¯rst four chapters, we are ¯nding a fuzzy function that best ex- plains the fuzzy data. We study di®erent models; linear, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic. To ¯nd the best model that explains some data, we look for the one that minimizes some error measure. This work presents new results concerning the spectrum of a class of random operators called displacement models. Such models may be used to model solids in which the positions of the individual atoms are randomly perturbed from an ideal periodic lattice. Human chromosomes are protected from degradation associated with cell division by hexameric repeats of 5’-TTAGGG-3’ termed telomeres. During cellular replication human chromosomes undergo the loss of up to 300 bp of DNA with each division, reaching a critical length which leads to senescence and apoptosis. Most cancer cells bypass this lifespan regulatory mechanism by the expression of telomerase, a protein complex that adds telomeres through the reverse transcriptase activity of its catalytic subunit, hTERT. This paper asks whether an aesthetics of Paleolithic tools is possible, and if so, what it might be. The application of our own aesthetic sensibilities to artifacts of prehistory is not difficult. We easily recognize and appreciate their visual and tactile qualities. The more complicated questions that the paper explores are whether we can uncover the aesthetic sensibilities of their makers and, if we cannot, whether aesthetic examination of prehistoric tools from our own perspectives is adequate or useful. This article considers the phenomenon of visual indeterminacy, which occurs when the sensory data gathered from the visual system cannot be integrated with semantic knowledge. A number of examples are given, including from the author's own art work, and some results presented from a scientific study based on them. The implications for the operation of the mind and, in particular, the nature of aesthetic experience are addressed, and the distinction between the perception of visual forms and their cognitive interpretation is discussed. This written document presents an introduction to the soprano songs by the Austro-American composer Eric Zeisl. Songs chosen comprise published songs (Der Schäfer, Die Fünf Hühnerchen, Vergiss Mein Nicht, Vor Meinem Fenster) as well as unpublished songs (Der Briefmark, Der Tag Erwacht, Immer Leiser Wird Mein Schlummer, Kommst Du Nicht Herein, Reiterliedchen). The thesis begins with a brief biographical outline of the composer and a discussion of his song style and his musical influences. Cajun French presents variable use of linguistic features, as any other variety of French does. Many Cajun French features are considered as deviant from the French norm or triggered by attrition although fluent speakers of Cajun French have always used them. In this sociolinguistic study, we analyze the use of locative prepositions. We add two important dimensions to existing studies: real-time evidence for a diachronic descriptive perspective, and a methodological tool, measuring the degree of exposure to French (MDI). Long range stand-off Raman and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) lidar signal simulations have been carried out using a modified UV-visible atmospheric transmission program and a modified lidar equation. The Hitran-PC atmospheric transmission program which normally operates over the wavelength range of 400 nm to the far-IR was modified to provide UV atmospheric attenuation (200 nm -- 400 nm) using the optical cross section data contained in the HITRAN database. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Ernest Hemingway's Death in the Afternoon, and Norman Mailer's An American Dream. Through an investigation of biographical, historical, cultural, and textual evidence, I will argue for the influence of several European philosophers---Friedrich Nietzsche, Søren Kierkegaard, and Martin Heidegger---on these authors and on the structures and messages of their works. In this work, pricing models of corporate coupon-bonds and credit default swaptions are derivedand analyzed. Corporate coupon-bonds are priced incorporating both intensity models and structural models, and also jumps introduced by seasonal effects. In deriving the models, we form portfolios to hedge the risk incurred by the instruments, then derive PDE equations using the arbitrage principle and the Ito Lemma for jump processes. The mathematical models are the parabolic-type PDE equations with terminal conditions and boundary conditions. Numerous factors are likely to influence response patterns to situational judgment tests, including agreeableness, leadership style, impression management, and job and organizational experience. This research presents background information and research on situational judgment tests and several constructs hypothesized to influence situational judgment test responses. A situational judgment test and manipulations to influence response patterns were developed and piloted with a small sample of management professionals and undergraduate students. The purpose of this study was to examine students' perspectives of writing instruction to gain insights into their awareness of the impact of high-stakes writing assessments on instructional practices and teaching strategies. Students in grades four and five who attended the 2004 Suncoast Young Author's Celebration (SYAC) served as the sample for this study. Data were gathered through surveys and interviews with 20 students who attended the SYAC. Survey questions were used to obtain general information about the students' perceptions of writing instruction and assessment. Sarcomas are rare mesenchymally-derived tumors with limited treatment options. Tyrosine kinases may serve as potential targets for sarcoma therapy because many are mutated or overexpressed in sarcomas and cell lines. One potential molecular target for sarcoma treatment is the Src tyrosine kinase. Three independently synthesized Src kinase inhibitors were evaluated in human sarcoma cell lines. Of the three, dasatinib, provided promising results as a potential sarcoma therapy. Until this study, dasatinib activity had not been characterized in sarcoma cells. Otto Rank is a significant but generally overlooked figure in the early history of psychoanalysis, and his work provides an illuminating context for the study of subjectivity and modernist culture. The "modernist identity" of my title is intended to represent, first, the concept of the individual self identified and expressed during this period and, secondly, the unique identity of modernist culture developed by artists through creative acts and emanating as the intellectual ambiance of the era.
