Nietzsche’S Conception Of Friendship, Ryan C. Kinsella

Theses

Interpreting Friedrich Nietzsche’s unorthodox conception of friendship is the focus of the following dissertation. In couching his conception of friendship within his naturalistic philosophy of the human person and his morality, I aim to establish the central importance of friendship in Nietzsche’s philosophy. An equally important second aim is to demonstrate how Nietzsche’s philosophy of friendship is distinctly constructive in contrast to other aspects of his philosophy. These aims are addressed in three chapters: in the first chapter I examine how Nietzsche discusses friendship in his works, in what tone he discusses friendship, and I will briefly discuss how his …

A Theory of Argument is an advanced textbook “written for upper-level undergraduate students who have completed at least one prior course in argumentation theory, critical thinking, informal logic, formal logic, or some other related discipline” (ix). This puts Vorobej’s book in a unique position since, to my knowledge, there are no other second course undergraduate textbooks with a nonsymbolic focus. (Second course symbolic logic textbooks written for undergraduates, rather than primarily for graduate students, were relatively rare until recently; the past decade has seen a proliferation in such texts.)

In previous work I argued against (i) the likelihood of finding a theoretically sound foundation for the linked/convergent distinction and (ii) the utility of the distinction even if a sound theoretical basis could be found. Here I subject Douglas Walton’s comprehensive discussion of the linked/convergent distinction found in Argument Structure: A Pragmatic Theory to careful scrutiny and argue that at best Walton’s theory remains incomplete and that attempts to fill out the details will run afoul of at least one of the problems adduced above—i.e., result in either a theoretically unsound distinction or a theoretically sound, but unnecessary distinction.

On A Moral Right To Civil Disobedience, David Lefkowitz

In this essay I argue that citizens of a liberal-democratic state, one that I argue has a morally justified claim to political authority, enjoy a moral right to engage in acts of suitably constrained civil disobedience, or what I will call a moral right to public disobedience. Such a claim may well appear inconsistent with the duty usually thought to correlate to a legitimate state’s right to rule, namely, a moral duty to obey the law. In the form of a handbook, this dissertation is predominantly directed at Western flute players interested in world music, the shaktthachi or bansttri, or who may be looking for advice on playing Japanese or Indian inspired works. Performing music that is not in the normal Western classical idiom can sometimes be a daunting experience for a flautist. There is a common misconception among those who are not scholars in the field that the Assyrian Empire was an aggressive one, relying simply on force, rather than reason, to assert its will over its neighbours and conquer vast territories. Granted that the Assyrian war machine was unparalleled at its apex, its rulers did not hesitate to use oaths, treaties and pacts wherever possible. Assyrian foreign policy was complex and aided Assyrian kings in conquering vast territories, not only with force, but also with words and the threat of force. This is a brief history of the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village, site of massive resistance to police harassment in June 1969. The Stonewall Riot immediately became a rallying point for U.S. gay liberation movements. The Stonewall resistance is commemorated by annual gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) protests and celebrations around the world.

In 1952, Boston Symphony director Charles Munch hired flutist Doriot Anthony Dwyer making her the first woman to play in a principal chair in one of the top five symphony orchestras in the United States. The purpose of this monograph is to document Doriot Anthony Dwyer's studies and career prior to her milestone appointment with the Boston Symphony. A chapter on her teaching method includes observations from the Flute Workshop at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and selected observations from former students of Dwyer's.

On the 31st of July, 1555, the noted Protestant reformer, Philipp Melanchthon, wrote this short note to his colleague, Adam Wasser: "[Melanchthon] betet um Rettung vor Gefahren, der Seuche in [Wittenberg], [Petrus Canisius] in Prag und den Turken." The man in Prague whom Melanchthon referred to was a priest of the Society of Jesus. One reason is that the project provides a creative outlet for all of the different skills and knowledge learned through my Electronic Media and Film Studies courses. Nationally recognized jewelry designer, photographer, and Hebbronville native Dian L. Malouf provides a second installment of her ongoing romance with the ranchers of the Texas brush country in Seldom Heard. Reminiscent of her first tome, Cattle Kings of Texas (Beyond Words Publishing, 1991), Seldom Heard is a “coffee table book” that provides what might be called a “romantic eulogy” to the industrious, entrepreneurial, and at times, eccentric behavior of twenty-five ranching families living in the rough mesquite and cactus riddled country south of San Antonio. Malouf views these ranchers in much the same way as late-nineteenth-century photographers perceived Native Americans--as …

A rich relationship unites the composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) and the history of psychology, especially if one considers his attempt to make music speak with the clarity of verbal language. Wagner's musical discourse participated in the development of psychology in the nineteenth century in three distinct areas. First, Wagner shared in the non-reductive materialist discourse on mind that characterized many of the thinkers who made psychology into an autonomous intellectual pursuit. Second, Wagner's theories and theatrical productions directly influenced two important psychologists - Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) and Christian von Ehrenfels (1859-1932).
