This thesis describes and analyses how the Richmond press operated as a propaganda machine during the final year of the Civil War. It argues that the newspapers of the Confederate capital regularly exploited the propaganda value of the news they reported, employing methods including distortion of facts and libelous personal attacks. They displayed a seemingly total disregard for veracity in their zeal to convince their readership that the cause was not lost, and created a false picture of the real situation to a population which was war-weary and desperate for reassurance that victory was still possible. The contents here in examine the artistic process undertaken by Vanessa Fassie to create the mixed media work, reunion. The subjects of fear, archetypal symbolism, personal and collective histories were examined through research, archival evidence, video, sound, movement, and installation. reunion, examines not only the powers of personal and collective histories through the symbolic language of archetypes, but also how fear manifests and evolves through time. The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the lenses of an environmental historian the myths and the realities of soil exhaustion as this ecological process relates to the developing environmental ethics of tobacco farmers of Prince Edward County, Virginia, from 1850 to 1880. During the nineteenth century the tobacco farms of Southside Virginia experienced three phases in a century long process of ecological change that both influenced and were influenced by events that occurred in human history. Scenic improvisation is dramatic performance without a script. Performers develop scenes in real time in front of an audience. They do this by submitting to a set of rules of relating on-stage which allow them, by mutual assent, to develop scenes and stories based on their relationships with one another. This thesis/dissertation is an exploration into Jaco Pastorius' approach to improvisation via detailed analysis of seven selected transcriptions between the years 1975-80. This dissertation also analyses Pastorius' development as a performer, highlighting the many techniques he pioneered on the electric bass guitar from a historic perspective focusing on the years 1967-74. The final chapter of this dissertation presents a series of etudes that are designed to assist an advanced performer assimilate selected aspects of Pastorius' harmonic approach to improvisation.

Today biblical scholars, theologians, and lay Christians recognize the difference between the canonical and apocryphal literature that have come down through the centuries to modern times. The purpose of the discussion here is to demonstrate by means of textual criticism that early scribes who copied Christian texts may have also differentiated between what are termed modernly as canonical and apocryphal literature respectively.
