Are the scientific and religious definitions of life irreconcilable or do they overlap in significant areas? What is life? Religion seems to imply that there is a qualitative distinction between human beings and the rest of creation; however, there is a strong tradition in Christianity and in Eastern thought that suggests that the natural world also has a relationship with God. Human dominion over other parts of creation exists, but does not obviate this connection, nor give humans a circle unto themselves. There are many similarities between the treatment of Indigenous peoples by their colonisers in Canada and Australia. Clearly, the English language was and still is a powerful tool of colonisation. It is a technology of power, the impact of which has devastated an alarming number of oral cultures and their native languages. Drawing on Indigenous and non-Indigenous textual examples, this paper is premised upon the fact that the process of writing in Standard English severely limits what can be said and who can speak. As such it mirrors the nature and development of Indigenous/non-Indigenous relations in Canada and Australia. I …

The Scepticism Of Francisco Sanchez, Damian Caluori

Philosophy Faculty Research

The Renaissance sceptic and medical doctor Francisco Sanchez has been rather unduly neglected in scholarly work on Renaissance scepticism. In this paper I discuss his scepticism against the background of the ancient distinction between Academic and Pyrrhonian scepticism. I argue that Sanchez was a Pyrrhonist rather than, as has been claimed in recent years, a mitigated Academic sceptic. In keeping with this I shall also try to show that Sanchez was crucially influenced by the ancient medical school of empiricism, a school closely allied with Pyrrhonism.

Civic Voluntarism As A Vehicle Towards Diversity, Alexander Aguado

History

Civic engagement, through voluntary associational membership, is touted as the keystone of community. It is within these groups where people get a chance to come together to form the necessary social network connections needed to accomplish collective endeavors. Civic engagement can have a bridging effect, bringing disparate people and communities together. Civic engagement can also have a bonding effect on members, which builds strong in-group ties, putting the membership at odds with outsiders. This article examines the relationship between voluntary associations and social network diversity. How To Rewrite Torah: The Case For Proto-Sectarian Ideology In The Reworked Pentateuch (4qrp), Roger S. Nam

This study challenges the initial categorization of the Reworked Pentateuch (4Q364-4Q367) as another non-sectarian textual witness to the Torah. A close analysis of the manuscripts suggests that certain unaligned readings likely ret1ect some of the sectarian ideas of the community. Other variants evoke both content and ideology of the authoritative "Rewritten Bible" documents, the Temple Scroll and Jubilees. These characteristics imply that 4QRP contains deliberate reworking of biblical material that is in line with sectarian ideology, in contrast to a mere mechanical copying of the text. The Global Gag Rule: Implications For Feminism, Ngo Funding, And Women’S Global Health, Amanda L. Breeden

This research project examines the effects of the Mexico City Policy on feminism, non governmental organizations (NGOs) funding, and women's global health. The paper argues that the Mexico City Policy, also known as the Global Gag Rule, is a form of hegemonic discursive and cultural imperialism that silences women and NGO voices. In doing so, the policy decreases access to reproductive health care, increases the feminization of poverty, and removes reproductive decision-making from women.

The research maintains this argument through review of the literature surrounding this issue. This literature review includes an examination of the history of the U.S. policy …

The discussion of Christian theology of religions has focused primarily so far on the question of whether or not the Christian understanding of salvation is available through other religions to their adherents. The predominant responses of exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism have shaped the debate and serve as a typology for organizing the various theologies of religions. While Pentecostals have generally fallen into the exclusivist category - e.g., that salvation is available only to those who have converted to Christian faith - there are also other resources related to their views regarding the universal work of the Holy Spirit that have …
