A Pragmatist Cosmopolitan Moment: Reconfiguring Nussbaum's Cosmopolitan Concentric Circles, Marilyn Fischer

Robert Fine and Robin Cohen conclude their essay “Four Cosmopolitan Moments” by stating that developing cosmopolitanism “has become an urgent moral necessity” (2002, 162). As resources for this task they offer the Stoics, Kant, Arendt, and Nussbaum as particularly important “moments” in the history of cosmopolitanism. David Held (2002, 57) shares their sense of urgency but worries that a Kantian understanding of political communities gives an inadequate basis for this task. Today the thought of having a church council with no consultation with women seems unimaginable, but in 1962 it was hardly noticed. Surprisingly, women were present at Vatican II although their presence took until the third session for this to occur. They were a minority among the 2,500 Catholic bishops who attended from around the world. Vatican II is the most significant event in Roman Catholic history since the Council of Trent (1545-1563), and women make up about half of the Roman Catholic Church’s membership, there is very little information available about the participation of women at these sessions. “The Day Dr. Knox Did It” may be read as Warren’s artistic response to the suicide of Ernest Hemingway. The poem repeats an important motif from Warren’s second, unpublished and untitled novel, written in the 1930’s. It also contains some interesting correspondences—and equally important contrasts—to the work of Ernest Hemingway, especially the short story “Indian Camp.”

“The Deepest And Widest Metaphor For Life” Re-Visions Of Christian Faith In Robert Penn Warren’S Later Poetry, Nicole Camastra

While it would be foolish to assert that Warren was a committed Christian and unequivocal believer, a kind of tempered faith does exist in some of Warren’s poems from Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978. Manuscript revisions of “Amazing Grace in the Back Country” and “Heart of the Backlog” reveal Warren’s struggle to find faith, not his conviction of living in it. However, “Heart of Autumn,” the final poem in the volume, points to the conscious act of surrendering to the depth of theistic conflict in its preceding counterparts.

As human beings, we are prone to all sorts of misreadings: of literary works, of others, of ourselves. This scholarly and personal visit to “The Briar Patch” reveals a younger Warren subtly, perhaps even unconsciously, advocating integration in a world that in the 1920’s was not (and some might say still isn’t) ready to accept full equality.

My journey into postmodernal progressions of ecclesial change began with an ethnographic survey of 12 Christian congregations that were largely led, staffed and populated with adults between the ages of 22 and 35. From his Christian conversion under the influence of revelatory experiences outside Rome in A.D. 312 until his burial as the thirteenth Apostle at Constantinople in 337, Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of the Roman world, initiated the role of and set the model for Christian imperial theocracy. Through his relationship with the Christian Divinity, his study of the Bible and apologia with leading Catholic intellectuals, and his assessments of divine interventions in imperial history, the emperor came to feel that he had been placed in power by the Almighty God of Christianity, that he had been chosen as …
