His image as a leader of peace, truth and wisdom has echoed through the annals of history since his death, influencing citizens and leaders around the world."

This study focused on the experiences of five African American women senior administrators employed at five predominantly White institutions in the Midwest ,1ml lhc Northeast. There are few African American women in senior and chief executive administrative positions. These African American women were chosen as research subjects because they completed the American Council on Education (AC'I~) Fellows Program and cun-ently serve as senior and chief executive administrators of' higher education institutions. The goals of this study were to explore how mentoring and leadership development, specifically the ACE Fellows program, impacted the careers of the African American women. Additionally, this study …

Although there is a growing body of research revealing the transformative potential of participation in service-learning programs, there is no study that qualitatively examines the effects of participation in a long-term service-learning program. This study investigates this issue. Interviews were conducted with participants of a university - sponsored AmeriCorps service-learning program to examine the effects of a long-term placement on participant understanding of and commitment to social justice, multicultural competence, and civic engagement. Several participants in this study increased their awareness of inequality, but only some adopted a commitment to social justice. Participants also developed several multicultural skills while interacting …

Starting in June 1950, the Korean War marked the beginning of a new era of warfare. The first limited war to take place in the nuclear age amid increasing Cold War tensions, Korea raised numerous questions of how the U.S. would interact with the Soviet Union in the new international climate. In this climate, both sides strove to maintain the world's balance of power. Small shifts in that balance, such as in Korea, assumed great importance, forcing the U.S. to act in areas not previously considered vital.

During the late nineteenth century rapid modernization, the liberalization of the press and theatre, as well as the proliferation of photography brought about the impetus for the development of a celebrity-driven mass media. Two women who would come to fame during this era, Sarah Bernhardt and Rachilde, utilized these innovations to create spectacular public personas which emphasized each woman's idiosyncrasies while confounding notions of gender. With her dramatic performances, extravagant publicity stunts and countless world tours Bernhardt became synonymous with the promise of progress in late-nineteenth century France; while Rachilde utilized the mass media in order to create a bizarre …

The white antebellum/Civil War-era woman occupies an evolving archetypal status in American cultural consciousness throughout the twentieth century. In 1936, extending a one-hundred year tradition of featuring Southern belles in novels, Margaret Mitchell published Gone with the Wind; in 1996, Charles Frazier published Cold Mountain. Both of these novels offer striking images of the Southern belle as well as the "poor white" Southern woman. My paper will compare the images and interactions of upper and lower class female characters, considering the earlier stereotypical characteristics given to each group, the homosocial relationships between the two groups, and the revision of both, …

Food is a central component of our daily lives. The highly charged, fast-paced world of today is a place we all move quickly through, often stopping just in time to eat and then continue on our way. The significance of food in rituals helps us recognize and remember this pleasure. My sculptural practice explores aspects of food in regards to pleasure, giving, and reception. Time, labor, and ritual are reflected in the techniques and processes used to manipulate various temporal and permanent materials. Giovanni Battista Ramusio was a sixteenth-century Venetian scholar who was very interested in the studies of geography and cartography. Ramusio's keen interest was in the findings of travelers and explorers to all parts of the world during the Age of Discoveries. He is remembered for his compilation of travel narratives entitled Delle Navigationi et Viaggi. Navigationi et Viaggi is a massive work in three volumes that includes a comprehensive collection of travel narratives translated into Italian and published by Giunti in Venice. While this was a major accomplishment, Ramusio's original commentaries on these travels and on the history of exploration …

This study examines maps published by the national news press in Britain and the United States from 1945 to 1955. The author analyzes these maps to discern similarities and differences in how British and American news journals put foreign affairs into geographic perspective. Such maps were a valuable medium for educating news readers of developing Cold War geopolitical events, while simultaneously shaping public opinion of foreign places. And they reveal much about a country's world view.

This thesis explores the broader implications of Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette through an acknowledgment and assessment of a male audience. The Coquette is a seduction narrative that is linked through form and tradition to Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple and William Hill Brown's The Power of Sympathy. However, this project examines the unique strategies Foster employs to make literary meaning outside the space of domesticity. The Coquette's social and political aims can be located in the textual divergences from similar texts of the period. This is an in-depth analysis of one of Louise Erdrich's most extraordinary characters, Sister Leopolda. I examine Leopolda first as a trauma victim who has suffered the loss of family, witnessed the death and assault of various friends, struggled with her mixed heritage, and fought to establish herself in a world where Indians were rapidly losing their power, their land, and their lives. Second, I use Friedrich Nietzsche's views of power to illustrate how Leopolda's seemingly random and fanatical exploits are actually examples of her will to power.
