The author argues that accusations of sexual depravity in early Christian literature, whatever their historical value, must be placed in the broader context of Greco-Roman rhetorical traditions in which charges of sexual deviance were stock elements of rhetorical slander. The first chapter, “Sexual Slander and Ancient Invective,” shows the degree to which the discourses of status and gender were intertwined in the Greco-Roman world. In this context, accusations of sexual deviance served the construction and maintenance of an elite identity understood as a male who is able to control his passions and avoid excess. Many historical accounts of the restoration of the American bison omit an important piece of that phenomenon. Most historians have focused their attention on two elements: western ranchers who started the earliest private herds and eastern conservationists who raised funds and lobbied for the creation of the first national preserves. However, the perpetuation of the image of buffalo in the hearts and minds of Americans was equally important in the eventual recovery of the species. Since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between China and the ASEAN states following the end of the Cold War, Sino-ASEAN relations have widened and deepened considerably. This is surprising, considering that most ASEAN states viewed China as a revisionist power and threat to regional security during the Cold War and Vietnam and the Philippines have a history of armed conflict with China over as-of-yet unresolved territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Reform is a word that, one might easily say, characterizes more than any other the history and development of Buddhism. Yet, it must also be said that reform movements in East Asian Buddhism have often taken on another goal—harmony or unification; that is, a desire not only to reconstruct a more worthy form of Buddhism, but to simultaneously bring together all existing forms under a single banner, in theory if not in practice. This paper contrasts orthodox and revisionist Islamic approaches to an evaluation of ethical issues related to capitalist marketing, employee management relationships and finance. It argues that while the orthodox Islamic ethical paradigm is fundamentally oppositional to capitalism revisionist discourses provide an Islamic legitimation of capitalist order and can provide an ideological framework for subsuming Islamic economy and society within global capitalism.

Studies show that formal dating has all but disappeared from college campuses and has been replaced almost exclusively by "hanging out" and "hooking up"—a euphemism for anything from kissing to having non-committal sexual encounters. The authors surveyed BYU students to discover if dating and courtship patterns mirror the national trends. They report that while BYU students hang out as much as their national peers, and a few even "hook up," BYU students are much different than students at other schools in their levels of abstinence before marriage, the frequency they go on formal dates in addition to hanging out, and …

This paper argues for the pragmatic construction of Confucian democracy by showing that Chinese philosophers who wish to see Confucianism flourish again as a positive dimension of Chinese civilization need to approach it pragmatically and democratically, otherwise their love of the past is at the expense of something else Confucius held in equal esteem, love of learning. Chinese philosophers who desire democracy for China would do well to learn from the earlier failures of the iconoclastic Westernizers, and realize that a Chinese democracy cannot come about by ignoring or dismissing such an important part of China's history, its Confucian tradition. …

This thesis examines several aspects of nine feature articles I wrote about the road bicycling community in southeastern, Virginia from January 2005 to September 2006. Chapter II examines how my preconceived notions of the "cycling feature" genre were reinforced as well as compromised through the process of writing and publishing the articles. Chapter III discusses how the process of composing the articles exposed some of the language peculiarities within the cycling community and how cyclists' shared language is a defining aspect of cycling culture. This study examined the origin of the terms second baptism and baptism in blood and how these terms and the concepts associated with them affected the baptismal theology of the Patristic church. The research showed that these topoi became motifs in specific martyrdom literature (passions) and Patristic writings of the second-fourth­ centuries and were probably invented by Tertullian. The authors examined used these terms in their writings to encourage and exhort those facing persecution to remain faithful-even to the point of death.
