This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, musical analysis, casting, direction, and postproduction analysis of Waterville Opera House's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Documentation includes research and analysis of the play, its music and an evaluation of the musical as a production vehicle for the department of Theatre Arts at Central Washington University.

The Shadowy Other In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: The Ego's Quest For Balance, Imene Belhassen

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis examines the notion of the other in Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, in the context provided by Carl Gustav Jung's analytical theory, i.e., his notions of the collective unconscious, the archetypes, and in particular, the shadow. Some characters, such as Victor Frankenstein and the Monster, are shown to function as symbolic representations of ego and shadow. The ocean symbolizes the collective unconscious, while the ship represents the process ofindividuation leading to the emergence of the self.

The narrator is Mary Shelly herself, after sailing the dark waves ofher unconscious. The otherness represented by Victor Frankenstein's creation reveals itself as an …

Born on July 6, 1805, the Danish Lutheran priest Peter Christian Kierkegaard, brother of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, was an exact contemporary of Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Both men devoted their lives to the refinement and advancement of their religious beliefs, albeit within very different sociohistorical contexts, and both had profound impacts on the shape of the religious landscape in their home countries. A Genealogy Of The Confession Of Faith In Mennonite Perspective, Susan L. Trollinger

This essay offers a genealogy, in the Foucauldian sense, of the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective. Thus, it provides an account of the origins of the document and its uses over time with attention given to the politics of both. The essay argues that the Confession was critical for the merger of the General Conference Mennonite Church and the Mennonite Church especially as it took on the function of the "teaching position" of the church. By way of a case study, the essay explores recent uses to which the Confession has been put. The essay concludes by …

The United Firm was a business management company established by Joseph Smith (founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) that oversaw both the Church's economic pursuits, such as maintaining properties, and some spiritual matters, such as publishing revelations and planning the city of Zion. Its board of managers essentially fulfilled roles later taken on by Church leaders when quorums were created. The term "United Firm" does not appear in the scriptures, and therefore the organization's role has been misunderstood and underestimated. One of Joseph Smith's pseudonyms for the United Firm was the United Order, but the United …

Filming Eugenics: Teaching The History Of Eugenics Through Film, Melissa Ooten, Sarah Trembanis

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

In teaching eugenics to undergraduate students and general public audiences, film should be considered as a provocative and fruitful medium that can generate important discussions about the intersections among eugenics, gender, class, race, and sexuality. This paper considers the use of two films, A Bill of Divorcement and The Lynchburg Story, as pedagogical tools for the history of eugenics. The authors provide background information on the films and suggestions for using the films to foster an active engagement with the historical eugenics movement.

The outbreak of Barbary captivity in the post-revolutionary period was one of the first significant challenges to American statehood and, more importantly, the rhetoric of liberty that had initially unified and galvanized the otherwise fractioned colonies. The Barbary nations, through politically hostile acts such as piracy and seizure, thus ironically participated in the rendering of abstract democratic principles, embodied by America' military victory over England, into the pragmatic functioning of a new republic. However, the process by which Barbary captivity assisted in the public enunciation of an idealized rhetoric of liberty or language of rights owes more to the cultural …
