Availability of good housing may no longer be an important issue for most U.S. citizens. Nowadays most are well housed and the problems confronting those who are not- except in the case of the homeless- are not highly visible. During the last decade, old warehouses in downtown Richmond, Virginia have been converted to new uses as restaurants, apartments, and offices. This reuse of old buildings has brought more people to the downtown area, making streets safer for pedestrians and residents than when the areas were abandoned. The Virtue Screen: An 18th Century Biombo At Virginia House, Jacqueline Carrera

An eighteenth century Mexican folding screen or biombo is located at Virginia House in Richmond, Virginia. A similar three-paneled screen is also located at this site. Upon seeing the similarities between each screen I concluded that the seven panels were at one point a part of one folding screen. The top sections of these folding screens show emblems that depict images of virtues and vices. The source of the emblems on the Virtue Screen is Otto Van Veen's Homtii Emblemata. The Museum Studies thesis project represented by this document entailed the compilation of a board of directors orientation packet for the Gila River Indian Community's recently established Huhugam Heritage Center (HHC) in Chandler, Arizona. The packet, including an administrative history of the institution and an annotated bibliography of museological resources on issues relevant to tribal museums, provides current and future members of the HEZC Board of Directors with information needed to effectively carry out their duties. This thesis provides an overview of Moritz Daniel Oppenheim's portraits of the Rothschild family with attention paid to the artist's training and personal artistic pursuits, as well as participation in Gentile and Jewish discourses. Oppenheim's knowledge of art history and use of style in creating the identities of his Rothschild subjects are the focus of this study. Oppenheim's methods and use of art historical styles are discussed with deference to the public or private nature of the portraits, and the resulting works' engagement of both German and Jewish issues. Methodologies used include the history of style and identity theory.

“Votes For Women”: Gender, ‘Race,’ Class, And The Suffrage Cartoons Of Life And Harper’S Weekly, 1890-1916, Mellisa Annesha Campbell

The 1890s onward ushered in a younger generation of female pro-suffragists in the United States of America (USA). Theoretically slamming the door on the prescriptive ideal of domesticity and women's abstinence from vice and exercise, they disrupted the "traditional" gender fiction or arrangement. In doing so, they made unequivocal that gender, 'race,' and class were not merely culturally constructed categories of identity, but products of the heteropatriarchal power structure which produce and reproduce masculine dominance over women. These female pro-suffragists were, more often than not, condemned by contemporary popular press. They were prevalently depicted as elite white women seeking amusement …

The theme of visitation is explored in four parts: strangers, impressions, acceptance, and departures. These themes are explored and constructed according to the progress of human interaction using the conventions and traditions of each form-free verse, the sonnet, senryu, the cinquain, the pantoum, the villanelle, the sesitna, the triolet, and the short story.

This work of creative writing consists of two stories, each of which concerns characters in closed communities in Iowa: an apartment building and a small town. The stories play with the concepts of interconnectedness, multiple perspectives, linearity, and "emergent meaning"-that the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. The first story is comprised of interconnected third-person threads and alternate perspective views. The second story is concerned with multiple first-person vignettes dealing with interpretations of shared experiences. This study provides an interpretation of the novel Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson in the context of nomadology, a post-modern philosophical project initiated by Gilles Deleuze. My analysis, concentrating on the plot and the narrative strategy of the novel, explores the concept of nomadic subjectivity and demonstrates how it is constructed in the text and how, if at all, it can be challenged. It also examines melancholy and loss, and their role in the formation of nomadic identity. The subject of small towns has both attracted and made some of the greatest authors in American literature. Through stunning imagery, description, and dialogue they create realistic portrayals of this places that lay them bare for all to see. Generous treatments portray them as generally good places that uphold the myth of small towns as utopian villages. For those with more unfavorable views, however, the literature shows the dullness of the town as well as the provinciality and closed-mindedness of its people. The Gospel According to Matthew, or, as the Joseph Smith Translation notes, the Testimony of St. Matthew, is the first of the four Gospels in our New Testament.1 This Gospel was very influential among early Christians.2 Tertullian, one of the early Church Fathers (c. AD 155–230), described Matthew as the “most faithful chronicler of the Gospel.”3 In this dispensation, the Prophet Joseph often used the first Gospel in his sermons.4 Although modern scholars have debated the authorship of this Gospel, ancient Christian writings are unanimous in ascribing it to the tax collector named Matthew in Matthew 9:9.

Jeopardy is a popular and longrunning TV game show in the United States. It is somewhat unusual in the world of game shows. In typical game shows, contestants are asked questions and then awarded money for providing correct answers. But, in Jeopardy that process is reversed: the contestants are given the answers and then receive money for correctly providing the questions. For example, contestants might be given the answer "a biblical measurement of volume approximately equivalent to eight gallons." Before the Latter-day Saints arrived in Salt Lake City, arrangements were made for a printing establishment in the Salt Lake Valley. At Winter Quarters, Brigham Young sent W. W. Phelps to obtain a press that might be brought west. This article briefly describes the Ramage press that Phelps acquired. The Deseret News, the first newspaper in the Rocky Mountains, began publication on June 15, 1850. This weekly eight-page paper contained news taken from national newspapers, events in Britain, and local information such as activities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and crop conditions. Well-known in both Canadian and Latter-day Saint history is the arrival of Charles Ora Card and his faithful band of followers in southern Alberta in 1887. Less explored is the much earlier venture into Upper Canada (Ontario) of such prominent Mormon leaders as Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, Orson Hyde, and scores of others during the 1830s in their concerted attempts to promulgate their new faith on Canadian soil. Their success in converting hundreds of people, many of whom were British- and American-born Methodists or members of other nonconformist faiths, prompted Mormon leaders to send missionaries …

Alexander Neibaur was a man of many talents. An educated man and gifted poet, he was fluent in seven languages. One account describes Neibaur as "a small, thin man, with a round ruddy face, with sharp eyes." He was also unusual inasmuch as he was Utah's first dentist and matchmaker, and the first known male Jewish convert to Mormonism; and he left the only known contemporary diary account of Joseph Smith's first vision experience.
