The Spiritual Potential Of Poetry, Carl Schlueter

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper presents poetry as a possible means of spiritual formation and transformation. Through the example of two poets, Seamus Heaney and Matsuo Basho, as well as two poetic devices, symbol and metaphor, poetry proves capable of radically engaging and converting both spiritual attention and action. In addition, the colloquial and connotative nature of poetic language renders poetry capable of expressing spiritual matters in a manner more quotidian and concrete. As a result, spiritual edification through poetry can offer a more affective and accessible alternative to the sometimes unaccommodating technical and abstract aspects of theological and philosophical prose.

Swerdlow, Marian, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Marian Swerdlow was born on November 8^th, 1949. Her mother was born in the Bronx, and her father’s family emigrated from Russia and lived on the Lower East Side. After marrying, they moved to a small house in Morrisania, at 3660 Park Avenue. Marian’s parents were active members of the communist party, although Marian herself did not find this out until she became involved in Vietnam protests and her parents informed her of their political inclinations.

The Sertoli Cell-Spermatid Junctional Complex: A Potential Avenue For Male Contraception, Katja Margrit Wolski

The Sertoli cell ectoplasmic specialization is a specialized domain of the calcium-dependent Sertoli-spermatid adherens junction. Structurally abnormal or absent Sertoli ectoplasmic specializations are associated with spermatid sloughing and subsequent oligospermia in conditions associated with reduced fertility potential, although the junctional strength between these cells is not known. Adjudin is a potential male contraceptive agent thought to interrupt testicular binding dynamics of adherens junctions, resulting in controlled spermatid sloughing.

It was hypothesized that the mechanism of action of Adjudin, pertinent to its putative contraceptive effect, is the disruption of the Sertoli cell-spermatid junction. This was tested in vitro using primary isolates …

Oral Histories

Dr. Cyril O. Byron was born atLincolnHospitalin theBronxonApril 15, 1920. His parents moved fromJamaicatoNew Yorkin the early 1900s. His father, who had been chief chef on Marcus Garvey’s ship, cooked for severalNew York Cityrestaurants and hotels, and founded Byron Caterers, one of theBronx’s largest black owned catering services. His mother did housework for prominentNew York Cityfamilies. Both were politically active, and his mother was a staunch follower of Marcus Garvey. His father was also superintendent for various buildings in which the family resided in theBronx, and Byron recalls doing much custodial work in the buildings with his brother.

FCRH Honors Program Oral History Project

Mr. John O., FCRH class of 1956, was a beloved professor of Romance languages and an administrator in foreign studies at the University of Washington. With his wife Arvella, he later ran Beanstalk Travel Tour Company, leading tours across Europe and drawing on his fluency in several languages as well as his love of art history and anthropology. He was a founding member of the Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences, where he taught English, Latin, and French.
