The Valais is the third-largest canton of Switzerland covering 2016 square miles of which only 1107 are productive. It is also a world of its own: it received its name "the valley" from the 100 mile long valley of the Rhone River which has its source above the small town of Gletsch below the highest point of the Furka pass. This main valley is flanked on the north and south side by many of the highest peaks of the Swiss Alps. The goal of this project is to teach the preliterate child to worship. To reach this goal it is necessary to assist and to reinvigorate spiritually delinquent baptized member parents so they can be nourished with Word and Sacrament. I believe adjusting an existing order of worship into a preliterate child's liturgy can do this. This would lead parents to engage regularly with the Word in the congregation's worship, as well as become the primary education provider for their children by assisting them with learning the actions, gestures and spoken words at church. Patterns Of Civil Society In A Modernizing Multiethnic City: A German Town In The Russian Empire Becomes Estonian, Bradley Woodworth

History Faculty Publications

In his article Bradley Woodworth examines the nationalization of a multiethnic provincial town in the Russian Empire -- Tallinn (Ger. Reval, Rus. Revel') -- in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, seeing it as part of the process of territorialization of national communities. At the center of this study is the development of civil society, the activities of professional and associational groups and local city government. The author argues that unlike earlier histories of the region, all three major ethnic groups (Baltic Germans, Estonians, and Russians) developed socially in similar ways. Embodied Knowledge: Writing Researchers’ Bodies Into Qualitative Health Research, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

After more than a decade of postpositivist health care research and an increase in narrative writing practices, social scientific, qualitative health research remains largely disembodied. The erasure of researchers’ bodies from conventional accounts of research obscures the complexities of knowledge production and yields deceptively tidy accounts of research. Qualitative health research could benefit significantly from embodied writing that explores the discursive relationship between the body and the self and the semantic challenges of writing the body by incorporating bodily details and experiences into research accounts. Researchers can represent their bodies by incorporating autoethnographic narratives, drawing on all of their senses, …

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

This Major Applied Project seeks to clarify the relationship between a Biblical text of Scripture being "read" or "told" and how that connects to the sermon preached on that text. It is believed that in many worship settings there is often a "disconnect" between the lectionary read (Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel readings) and the sermon text selected from one of those readings. By the time the preacher begins his sermon the hearer has often forgotten the Scripture read earlier. Paul Cézanne's association with the dealer Ambroise Vollard made Vollard's fortune and contributed to making the artist famous. How much the dealer was responsible for Cézanne's fame (and the market it generated), however, is open for debate. There is no doubt that three Cézanne shows at Vollard's Paris gallery, beginning with the first, held in November-December 1895, coincided with the sharp escalation in the artist's prices. Other factors, however, also assisted Cézanne's market fortunes-including such landmarks as the purchase of a Cézanne landscape in 1897 by Berlin's Nationalgalerie. Artists, too, contributed at least as much to forging Cézanne's market as …
