Gender Mainstreaming And Integration Of Women In Decision- Making: The Case Of Water Management In Samari-Nkwanta, Ghana, Nana Ama Serwah Poku Sam

Water, as a natural resource, is a basic necessity of life. In recent years, it has been recognized that community participation, especially by women, is essential to the success of water and sanitation projects in poor communities of developing countries. This research therefore focused on an assessment of how the conscious consideration of gender issues has affected the outcomes of the Samari-Nkwanta Water and Sanitation Project (SWSP) in the South-western part of Ghana.The study revealed that the involvement of women and men from the initial stages of project to the end helps to enhance more equitable participation and responsibility sharing.

“Music at the Fair!” gives the daily musical programs for The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, held in Omaha, Nebraska, June 1 through October 31, 1898.

The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition brought an unprecedented array of local, national, and international musical acts to Omaha, NE in 1898. This served to designate Omaha, "the gateway to the west" as a musical hub, as well as to incite musical excitement in the region. Some of the more popular acts featured were the Theodore Thomas Orchestra, the U.S. Marine Band, and the Apollo Club of Chicago. Many more groups and their musical programs can …

This thesis examines four works by Herman Melville, Moby-Dick, Typee, Omoo, and Benito Cereno as examples of a minority of nineteenth-century American literature that deconstruct negative black male stereotypes and promote unity through brotherhood. Melville works through juxtapositions and reversals in his use of language as a means of unseating such negative stereotypes. In doing so, he invites his audience to challenge and potentially eliminate the racial stereotypes. Melville believed in indirect invitations to reform, such as displacing his characters from his readers' environment, so that racial problems would not seem so "close" them. This paper is Dr. Al Wolters’ “translation of twenty pages from Dr. Jan Veenhof’s dissertation on Bavinck, titled Revelatie en Inspiratie.” Dr. Veenhof succeeded G. C. Berkouwer in the chair for dogmatic theology at the Free University in Amsterdam, then went on to teach at the universities of Basel and Bern and for one semester at Calvin Theological Seminary. As emeritus, he is still involved in theological and pastoral work.

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Women are closely connected to and affected by use of, access to and control over water resources, including water supply and sanitation facilities. Drawing on case studies from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, this article: analyses the central role women play in providing, managing and safeguarding water resources and sanitation services; examines the issues of concern to be addressed in order to implement a gender-sensitive approach to water management and sanitation; and makes recommendations for strategies to mainstream gender perspectives in the field of water resources and sanitation management.

n this paper, we explore how women and young girls in two informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya, are affected by water in its various forms. We analyze sixteen focus group discussions with women, girls in school, and girls out of school, focusing on their unique water experiences and concerns. Drawing on the strengths of qualitative data, we thickly describe how women navigate the water challenges prevalent in the urban slum context.

From the middle passage to modern day red light districts, from human zoos to the “compassionate” forum of the TV screen, the display of the black body has long formed the narrative thread of a monologue uttered by a West pleased with the sound of its own voice. The staging of the black body can be said to have rendered black voices silent, and this study sets out to break this silence.

Contemporary narratives featuring organ transplants speak of a painful but also life-saving contact when the “donor” body is African and the receiving body is European. At this point the surgical operation and that of the imagination assume a whole other dimension, as the inequality and interdependence of these two bodies invite the reader to re-imagine the links between the concept of the “body,” on the one hand, and culture and language, on the other. The thesis examines two different reformist approaches to Islamic law in general and women's rights in particular. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im and Khaled Abou El Fadl are chosen as the focus of this study because of their respective innovative approaches to a historically controversial issue. The focus is on the Qur'anic verses and various definitive texts in Qur'an or al-nas qati al-delalah. Discussed is the historical context of the scholars interpretation of the Qur'anic verses; the relationship between the historical context of the Qura'nic verses and the occasions for which the Quranic verses were revealed to the Prophet; any differences between …

This thesis suggests an alternative approach to teaching general music/music appreciation to students in grades 7-12 that incorporates the history of rock and roll and pop music. An approach to teaching rhythm reading skills through rap music is also suggested using Rockin ' Rhythm Raps by Cheryl Lavender (1998). Rare is the student that has not been saturated with popular culture during most of his or her lifetime. The case is made that teaching what is relevant to students, namely the history of vernacular music, can contribute significantly to the development of music appreciation. [Excerpt] "When Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection in 1859, it sparked some of the most contentious debates in American intellectual history, debates that continue to rage today. Although these debates have numerous political ramifications, the question posed in this paper is narrow: Does the Establishment Clause permit a particular assessment of current evolutionary theory – intelligent design (“ID”) – to be taught as science in American elementary and secondary public schools?
