A cohort of tribal college faculty and tribal professionals are working toward graduate degrees in the biological sciences through a collaborative program nicknamed the “Prairie Ph.D.” Results to date show promise for graduate education targeted at American Indian communities. Program history, approach, and formative evaluation are discussed.

Sixty years ago baseball was a major business and cultural force for African Americans. But the end of the Negro Leagues and the desegregation of baseball heralded a new era that marked the beginning of a cultural drift between baseball and African Americans. This paper will explore the social factors embedded in the Negro Leagues that gave baseball cultural relevance for African Americans and what is impeding those factors from operating again.

The issue of the fairness of many current affirmative action policies stands in a necessary juxtaposition with the relationship citizens have with each other in the U.S. free enterprise system. Although it is the case that many of today's affirmative action programs that involve preferential treatment are flawed and morally unjustified as they stand, it is not the case that no strong affirmative action policy is morally justified. We have calendars in the American continent that go back thousands of years. Researchers today confirm that these calendars not only measure the Macro-cosmos: They are also a sophisticated charting of the inner-world, particularly the dynamics between the body, the emotions, and the multiple elements that constitute our Self. These views are represented in calendars, ancient codices, and pre-Hispanic ceremonial centers. They are also alive in popular views, and traditional healing practices known today as “Curanderismo.” One of these perspectives is the use of the four suns. This presentation will explore this perspective.

This is an interactive presentation of a husband and wife team in which results of a methodological triangulation study that compares and contrasts ethnic minority faculty at both predominantly white and predominately ethnic minority institutions on bicultural and occupational stress are discussed. The investigator-generated, Bicultural System’s Conceptual Model, is used to interpret results and derive strategies for achieving a climate more conducive to optimal engagement of all faculty. Seven themes emerge from this study: Appraising, Proving, Fitting-In, Defending, Distancing, Being Invisible, and Mentoring are discussed in light of coping strategies used by ethnic minorities in bicultural settings. It borrows from Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal’s concept of Humanizing Education. FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Philosophy

Bell’s spaceship ‘paradox’ [1] in special relativity is a particularly good one to examine with students, because although it deals with accelerated motions, it can be dissolved with elementary space–time diagrams. Furthermore, it forces us to be very clear about the relativity of simultaneity, proper length, and the ‘reality’ of the Lorentz contraction.

This work began with the presupposition that asynchronous web-based interactions (and collaboration) can add a special dimension to learning. Both projects were carried out with Engineering students. In both instances, institutionalized discussion boards were created for online group interaction. Data for both projects were collected from student surveys and. postings on the discussion boards. Analysis of student surveys showed different responses to the use of discussion boards. Students in the first project viewed themselves as accountable for their own learning, whereas students in the second project had a negative perception of the online discussion platform. On English As An International Language, Saksit Saengboon

In this position paper, I argue that English as an International Language (EIL) is meant to elucidate the current practice of English teaching, and more importantly to broaden the scope of inquiry focusing on such issues as English language policy, teaching approaches and materials (e.g., use of non-native literature). Being context-sensitive and culture-specific, EIL tries to answer a local question as to what constitutes "standard" English, etc. In addition to a tentative model of EIL, I also provide a list of eminently researchable topics revolving around the notion of EIL.
