The Epistle To The Hebrews And Patron-Client Relationships: Toward A Missiological Appropriation, Cheryl D. Doss

Missionaries in cultures where patron-client relationships are common can find their participation in such relationships difficult. Recent New Testament scholarship has illuminated the patron-client relationships implicitly described in the epistle to the Hebrews. Utilizing this scholarship, this article explores the patron-client relationships illustrated in the epistle to the Hebrews seeking biblical principles to guide missionary life and practice.

Parallel Structures: Challenges And Opportunities, Bruce L. Bauer

This article presents a case study of the Vietnam house-church movement, looking at the challenges and opportunities that often exist when security concerns and governmental persecution force the creation of a parallel structure through which God can work. The article suggests ways to maintain administrative linkage and supervision between parallel structures and gives several reasons why parallel structures may be necessary in our present sinful world.

Structures For Adventist World Mission In The Twenty-First Century, Gorden R. Doss

Christian denominations and mission agencies use different structural models for doing world mission. This article discusses four models and the ecclesiological and practical implications of each for Adventist world mission. The current structural model is analyzed and suggestions are made for adjusting it to better fulfill Adventist world mission in the contemporary context.

In 1776, twelve of the thirteen colonies simultaneously but independently declared their independence from Britain. New York, whose delegate had yet to obtain permission to do so from the capital, declared independence shortly after learning the other twelve had done so. In the coming months and years the revolutionaries would fight a tough and bitter war together and . draft the infant nation's first formative document. In this period of great trial and turmoil, the colonies banded together like never before, fighting side by side for their dream of freedom and independence.

The Failure Of Labor Management Cooperation At Two Maine Paper Mills: A Case Study,"Advances In Industrial And Labor Relations, Michael Hillard

Labor management cooperation, and the adoption of high-performance work systems (HPWS), are central topics in recent industrial relations research, with much emphasis given to “best-practice” success stories. This paper uses a case study analysis, relying on conventional, and oral history interviews, to explore why managers, union leaders, and workers in two Maine paper mills rejected the cooperation and the HPWS model. It explores how local history and culture, regional factors like the dramatic International Paper (IP) strike in Jay, Maine, instability in industry labor relations, management turnover, and instability in corporate governance contributed to these two mills’ rejection of Scott …

In Jane Austen’s Art of Memory and other works, Jocelyn Harris has demonstrated the importance of Austen’s literary contexts for understanding and appreciating Austen’s art. One context for understanding Pride and Prejudice is the conduct book it mentions by name, James Fordyce’s Sermons to Young Women. Mr. Collins chooses it to read aloud to the Bennet girls, and when Lydia interrupts him, he responds: “I have often observed how little young ladies are interested by books of a serious stamp, though written solely for their benefit.” I would argue that reading Pride and Prejudice next to Fordyce’s Sermons reveals that …

At the time of the Reformation, Valais was under the jurisdiction of France, Savoy and Spanish Milan. In the last decade of the 16th century and then more intensely in the 17th century, it became a theater for the dynamics of this power. Valais stood in a close relationship with their Savoyard neighbors that had evolved from a relationship of competition into a more friendly union by the 16th Century. The first accord came in 1528 when the Duke of Savoy withdrew from the district of Saint-Maurice, (conquered in 1475). In 1536 Valais engaged with Bern in a concentrated battle …

"This project investigates the image of Spain's Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) from a historical and literary point of view and in light of theories of space. It is postulated that the Camino serves as a dramatic space, a type of theatrical stage that serves as an integral backdrop for the production of many literary pieces throughout time. This stage set, or the image of the Camino, changes with the political and social ambiance of the historical moment. Enacted in 1833, Great Britain’s abolition of West Indian slavery confronted the United States with the complex interrelationship between slavery and progress. Dubbed the Great Experiment, British abolition held the possibility of demonstrating free labor more profitable than slavery. Besides elating the world’s abolitionists, always hopeful of equating material with moral progress, the experiment’s success would benefit Britain economically. Presented evidence of the greater profits of free labor, slaveholders worldwide would find themselves with compelling reason to abandon slavery. Likewise, London policymakers would proceed with little need—and no economic incentive—to promote abolition in British foreign policy. British hopes foundered on …

This dissertation examines past cultural influences that have shaped theatre historians' perception of ancient Greek and contemporary Native American performance. It suggests that through a recognition of these influences, which have long tempered the Western narrative of theatre, ancient and Indigenous performance can be reviewed as similar forms of a lived exchange. The study tracks the formation of certain beliefs and assumptions within performance history through Roman, early Christian and Renaissance cultural identities. This study is an examination of the public imaging of gay men and lesbians during the latter part of the twentieth and early part of the twenty-first centuries. The study looks at public imaging as it is performed in the service of the political aims of gay people, with an eye towards the kinds of tensions and erasures that occur when one monolithic identity is promoted. Through these examinations, I create a kind of contemporary history of the gay political rights movement. The Iconography of Nationalism: Icons, Popular Culture, and American Nationalism develops a model of cultural icons, defining icons as highly visible, culturally variable, and overdetermined auratic images. Situating icons within the context of mass reproduction technologies and American nationalism, this study seeks to demystify the simple images presented by infantile, national, and scapegoat icons in literature, film, and political rhetoric. This dissertation argues that icons participate in the American nationalist project by channeling citizens’ political and patriotic feelings through seemingly simple images.
