Aristotle sometimes draws analogies between perceiving and thinking. One analogy, for example, concerns the relation holding between faculties and their objects. If thinking is like perceiving, then as the faculty of perception is to the object perceived, so too the faculty of thought is to the intelligible object. Of course, there are also disanalogies between perception and thought. For example, where perception requires external stimulation by sensible substances, thought does not generally require external stimulation. How far then might we push the analogy? A formal language was invented by Aristotle and used by him in his lectures. This formal language consisted of Greek capital letters used as placeholders, arrayed in the schemata of the three figures recognized as authentically Aristotle’s. In these arrays, arcs under the placeholder letters indicate how the terms are linked in the premisses and conclusion and are read as some inflection of ΰπάρχειν, used by Aristotle as a second- order expression to convey the relation that the terms—not the designata of the terms-of a syllogism have to one another. Ratiocination And Socrates' Daimonion: A Practical Solution, Anthony K. Jensen

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Socrates's commitment to 'follow the argument wherever it leads' seems to be at odds with his notorious 'divine sign' or daimonion. It appears in several dialogues as a divine force that Socrates cannot help but to obey, even in some cases where no negative consequences would seem to have otherwise obtained. This paper explores the meaning of the daimonion in the religious and cultural contexts of early Greece, concluding that the scope of the daimonion is restricted to Socrates' practical activities rather than his theoretical engagements.

As the calendar turns over from 2004 to 2005 we are back where we were a year ago with the BCS. Once again the "C" has been removed. At the end of the regular season there were five undefeated college football teams. In the meticulously constructed world of the BCS only two of those five teams played each other in bowl games negating the claim of a national championship although there certainly is a BCS champion.

Vera Simpkins-Pastore is a Professor Emeritus of psychology who taught in the City University of New York System and has resided in the Bronx for several years. As such, she is able to attest to the experience of growing up as a member of the Bronx African-American community.

Simpkins-Pastore was born in Mount Vernon, but moved to the Bronx at the age of 12. She told the Bronx African-American History Project that this decision was prompted by her landlord selling her family’s house as well as some marital difficulties between her parents. Mihoko Suzuki carefully puts together class and gender in her study, Subordinate Subjects: Gender, the Political Nation, and Literary Form in England, 1588-1688, by showing the similarities and linkages as well as the differences between apprentices and women in their desire to be part of the political nation in early modern England. At the time their attempts to gain power and autonomy were ultimately unsuccessful but they did have important ramifications later. Historians and political theorists have traditionally seen the French revolution as the beginning of the ideal of equality, what Suzuki calls "the political imaginary of equality" (2). Yet …

The Myth Of The Swiss Lutherans: Martin Bucer And The Eucharistic Controversy In Bern, Amy Nelson Burnett

Most accounts of the eucharistic controversy assume that after the Swiss cities rejected the Wittenberg Concord, Martin Bucer had no more influence in Switzerland. In Bern, however, a party supporting Bucer's concord theology dominated the church from the later 1530s through the 1540s. Although traditionally identified as Lutherans, the theological statements of this group demonstrate their loyalty to Bucer's "middle way" between Luther and Zwingli. The expulsion of this party from Bern in 1548 meant the end of Bucer's influence in western Switzerland, finalized by the Consensus Tigurinus, which carefully avoided any Buceran terminology.

Hurricane Shoes and Other Stories is a collection of short stories that center on evolving and devolving relationships. The characters in these stories form tentative bonds with people in their lives while other relationships slip away. In "Hurricane Shoes," Katrina attempts to reinvent herself by ending an affair. Katrina's pregnancy and her mother's cancer pull the two women closer. "Da's Violets" is about Cheryl's changing relationship with her father. Just as he moves on from the wife who left him for her podiatrist, the wife returns with hopes to reconcile. These stories catch characters in moments when they must make …
