The Waqf In Relation To Maintenance And Repair: The Medieval Sources And Their Uses For Contemporary Practices, Dina Ishak Bakhoum Feb 2005

The Waqf In Relation To Maintenance And Repair: The Medieval Sources And Their Uses For Contemporary Practices, Dina Ishak Bakhoum

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The buildings of the different Islamic dynasties in Egypt with their great cultural and aesthetic significance have survived and remained functional despite numerous natural as well as man-made disasters. This was possible not only because of the high structural engineering knowledge and construction techniques with which they were built, but also due to the existence of the waqf system, which was not merely a system of endowments for charitable and pious causes, such as constructing mosques and schools but also a system concerned with maintenance and repair. Its main aim was the upkeep of the charitable act and the benefit …

Art Of The Astrolabe, Heather Suzanne Campbell Feb 2005

Art Of The Astrolabe, Heather Suzanne Campbell

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The astrolabe is a well known scientific instrument, commonly found in Islamic art collections. Despite its placement in art museums, it does not receive the same examination or discussion as other metalwork. This leads to errors in dating and place of origin when an instrument that lacks a dedication inscription or a signature.

This study places the astrolabe in an art historical context and not a scientific one.

Much literature has been written on this instrument concentrating on the scientific nature of the instrument or as part of a collection of scientific instruments. Its history, function, place in society and …

Egyptian Political Cartoons: Evolution And Impact As Seen By Cartoonists Themselves, Rania Mohamed Saleh Feb 2005

Egyptian Political Cartoons: Evolution And Impact As Seen By Cartoonists Themselves, Rania Mohamed Saleh

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The power of Egyptian political cartoonists is immense. By means of their simple drawings, cartoonists can reach the mind of the people in less time than the political leader does via speeches. They have usually found ways to circumvent the censorship, which has been strict over different periods of time, and put forward their criticism. This study looks at the role of political cartoons in depicting major events, developments, and trends (e/d/ts) in Egypt. Through a series of Delphi questionnaires, these e/d/ts were determined by 23 political cartoonists, who also recorded their perspective regarding the impact of cartoons on the …

Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz Feb 2005

Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article explores the challenges of espousing a critical pedagogy within the managerial climate that presently shapes teacher education. Current discourses of professionalism are incommensurate with an understanding of the way that literacy practices are grounded in the social worlds in which both school and university students operate. Such discourses construct graduate teachers as the providers of decontextualised literacy skills to school students whose existing communication networks are ignored. We argue that an alternative understanding of professional practice can be developed by focusing on the textual resources university students use to mediate their learning, and by locating their emerging professional …

Instruction Of Throwing Events In Track And Field : An Historical Analysis, Marilyn Louise Coleman Jan 2005

Instruction Of Throwing Events In Track And Field : An Historical Analysis, Marilyn Louise Coleman

Theses

Track and field throwing events (discus, javelin, hammer and shot put), originating in ancient Greece and pre-Medieval Ireland and Scotland, require complex physical interaction. An historical analysis of the features of traditional media which have been used as coaching tools in these events - books, video, audio, diagrams, photographs and hypertext - provides the foundation on which future multimedia tools can be developed.

Variables associated with effective coaching are based on technique, science, use of expert models, and motor learning theory. Training in these events is enhanced through the use of multimedia, a tool uniquely suited to the variables of …

Blogs : Open-Source Diaries, Kelly Schab

Theses

Weblogs, or blogs, are Web sites maintained by one person or a few select people, are usually about one distinct subject, are constantly updated, and attract repeat visitors. This form has become a popular means of self-expression because it empowers both the writer and the audience. Blogs empower writers by providing them with an easy way to self-publish their points-of-view to a wide audience. Sensitivity Analysis Of Design Parameters For Trunnion-Hub Assemblies Of Bascule Bridges Using Finite Element Methods, Jai P. Paul Jan 2005

Sensitivity Analysis Of Design Parameters For Trunnion-Hub Assemblies Of Bascule Bridges Using Finite Element Methods, Jai P. Paul

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hundreds of thousands of dollars could be lost due to failures during the fabrication of Trunnion-Hub-Girder (THG) assemblies of bascule bridges. Two different procedures are currently utilized for the THG assembly. Crack formations in the hubs of various bridges during assembly led the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to commission a project to investigate why the assemblies failed.

Consequently, a research contract was granted to the Mechanical Engineering department at USF in 1998 to conduct theoretical, numerical and experimental studies. It was found that the steady state stresses were well below the yield strength of the material and could not …
