Biblical Foundations Of Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders Mar 2005

Biblical Foundations Of Spirituality, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

The title for the symposium represented in this volume of essays is derived from an important claim of the Second Vatican Council that marked, for Catholics, a recognition of a reality that had been largely obscured for us by the polemics of the Counter-Reformation, namely, that Scripture is indeed the soul of theology.' I say "for Catholics" because the churches of the Reformation retained a sense of the centrality of Scripture in Christian life, worship, and thought that the Catholic Church seemed to lose sight of during the four centuries that followed the Reformation. So, for Catholics, the Council's insistence …

Trends In The Portrayal Of The Puritans Found In American History Textbooks From The 1870s Through The 1990s As Influenced By Secular Educational Philosophy, James A. Wicks Mar 2005

Trends In The Portrayal Of The Puritans Found In American History Textbooks From The 1870s Through The 1990s As Influenced By Secular Educational Philosophy, James A. Wicks

Faculty Dissertations

There has been a movement to exclude a Biblical worldview from high school American history textbooks exchanging it for a secular worldview through the use of historical revisionism. Available literature failed to adequately address the impact of revisionism within the pages of American history textbooks specifically concerning the portrayal of the American Puritans. Therefore, an analysis of American history textbooks beginning in the 1870s through the 1990s was necessary to demonstrate the existence of historical revisionism regarding the treatment of the American Puritans and whether a trend existed to revise their place in American history textbooks over the past two …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2005-03-01, Jean Vermette Mar 2005

Family Affairs Newsletter 2005-03-01, Jean Vermette

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Replacing The Patient: The Fiction Of Prosthetics In Medical Practice, Laura L. Behling Mar 2005

Replacing The Patient: The Fiction Of Prosthetics In Medical Practice, Laura L. Behling

Scholarship and Professional Work of the Associate Provosts

The invention of computer simulations used for practicing surgical maneuvers in a video game-like format has an ancestry in the artificial limbs of history and is reflected, grotesquely, in Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Man That Was Used Up ". The nineteenth century worked to ensure that the incomplete body did indeed retain a sense of self by creating prostheses to mimic corporeal wholeness. Our present-day technology seems intent on doing precisely the opposite, deliberately fragmenting the body and challenging our understanding of the body and the prosthetic.

A Relational Hermeneutic Toward Connective Ecclesial Leadership, Dwight Jason Friesen Mar 2005

A Relational Hermeneutic Toward Connective Ecclesial Leadership, Dwight Jason Friesen

Doctor of Ministry

The modern western church is experiencing a crisis of hermeneutic. The pervasive hermeneutic or interpretive lens employed by modern Christ-followers has engendered a largely static view of church structure and leadership. Simply put, the Western church fails to see relationally. This problem of "visual impairment" will be addressed by crafting a relational hermeneutic composed of three distinct and overlapping lenses: a theological/biblical (God) lens, a sociological/ontological (humanity) lens and a scientific/network (the cosmos) lens. Lens 1: God is social. For orthodox Christ-followers a relational hermeneutic begins with a God who is social; a Tri-unity of Divine persons, each lovingly serving …

The Magic Flute Program [2005], University Of Southern Maine Department Of Music, University Of Southern Maine School Of Music Mar 2005

The Magic Flute Program [2005], University Of Southern Maine Department Of Music, University Of Southern Maine School Of Music

Programs 2004-2005 Season

Written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Directed by Walter Stump

Musical Director Ellen Chickering

Choreographer Annette L. Bourque

This production was entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) XXXVII.

From the program:

Mozart's masterpiece uses a light touch and beautiful music to retell a simple story borrowed from the popular literature of the day. Watch the magic unfold as opposites attract and collide in this tale of youths' journey toward maturity which, perhaps in the process, reveals the composer's vision of humanity and its progress toward enlightenment.

As the opera opens, the naive Prince Tamino is saved from …

Toward Better Hearing Of The Word In The Sermon, Darrell Zimmerman Mar 2005

Toward Better Hearing Of The Word In The Sermon, Darrell Zimmerman

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this project was to equip some members of the congregation to be discerning receivers of the sermon by improving their active and intentional listening capabilities. The methodology of the project included the development and teaching of a course of instruction on the theology and practice of preaching, a period of participant implementation, and interviews of participants in the study toward an evaluation of the project. Participant response showed a greater or lesser benefit depending on willingness and ability to apply the learnings. Recommendations for enhanced future effectiveness of the course are included.
