Creating A Multisensory Enter-Active Gospel Storytelling Exegetical Commentary, Terrence O'Casey Apr 2005

Creating A Multisensory Enter-Active Gospel Storytelling Exegetical Commentary, Terrence O'Casey

Doctor of Ministry

Many pastors and teachers struggle to make the biblical text come alive both in their own lives and in their congregations. Part of the reason is that although existing commentary genres are a wonderful tool to help in understanding Scripture, they may not allow some to encounter more fully the Word. The reasons for this are 1) great academic commentaries may not alone be able to connect with a pastor and his or her congregation; 2) there are currently no commentaries that take into account the multisensory and emotional dimensions of the original author and text; and 3) with the …

Mentoring With Dignity: A Plan For Pastors And Churches To Support Women In Recovery From Domestic Violence, Martha F. Williams Apr 2005

Mentoring With Dignity: A Plan For Pastors And Churches To Support Women In Recovery From Domestic Violence, Martha F. Williams

Doctor of Ministry

This work addresses the need for the church, fully supported by the pastor and leaders, to minister to women who attend church and are suffering in abusive marriages. The Mentoring With Dignity recovery program provides a simple, easily accessible solution that can be readily implemented by churches and is built of commonly known, widely acceptable and respected components: Twelve Step and Stephen Ministers. The church must work for compassion and justice in any area that takes away freedom, stifles life, or invalidates persons. Violence against another in whatever form it takes is an offense against the integrity of life so …

A Preliminary Study Of The Kaogong Ji (The Book Of Artificers), Hanmo Zhang Apr 2005

A Preliminary Study Of The Kaogong Ji (The Book Of Artificers), Hanmo Zhang

Masters Theses

The focus of this paper is on the ancient Chinese text of the Kaogong ji, which is now included in the Zhouli as one of its chapters. Through a careful comparison between the Kaogong ji and the rest of the Zhouli and through a synthetic analysis of academic discussions of the completion date and authorship of the Kaogong ji, this paper attempts to show that the Kaogong ji had been an independent text before its inclusion. It goes on to disprove the argument that the Kaogong ji was forged by the Han scholar Liu Xin as political propaganda. …

Kieft's War And Tributary Politics In Eastern Woodland Colonial Society, Nicholas Klaiber Apr 2005

Kieft's War And Tributary Politics In Eastern Woodland Colonial Society, Nicholas Klaiber

Honors Theses

From the earliest interactions between the Dutch and native groups in the New World, cultural differences regarding the ideas of property and governmental jurisdiction created societal conflict. When native tribes in the vicinity of New Netherland began to consolidate into traditional political alliances based on tribute and protection during the mid-1630s, thereby undercutting theoretical European dominance in New Netherland and New England, the English and Dutch both aggressively used the native system by forcing tributary status on local tribes through armed conflict, ritualized violence, and the use of tribal extermination as symbols of power. For the Dutch, this movement was …

Cassirer’S Philosophy Of Symbolic Forms: Between Reason And Relativism; A Critical Appraisal, Sebastian Luft Apr 2005

Cassirer’S Philosophy Of Symbolic Forms: Between Reason And Relativism; A Critical Appraisal, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper pursues the double task of (a) presenting Cassirer’s Philosophy of Symbolic Forms as a systematic critique of culture and (b) assessing this systematic approach with regards to the question of reason vs. relativism. First, it reconstructs the development of his theory to its mature presentation in his Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. Cassirer here presents a critique of culture as fulfilling Kant’s critical work by insisting on the plurality of reason as spirit, manifesting itself in symbolic forms. In the second part, the consequences of this approach will be drawn by considering the systematics Cassirer intended with this theory. …

Adoption In New Testament Times, Baina David King Apr 2005

Adoption In New Testament Times, Baina David King

Senior Honors Theses

The plight of abandoned children in ancient culture is a plight that reaches to the depths of practical Christian living. Adoptions in both Semitic and Greco-Roman were conducted in much different ways than we do now. The background and society in which these adoptions took place, particularly in New Testament times is very important to understanding first century families. Closely tied to the subject of adoption is the subject of orphans, since many of those adopted were orphans. In examining the varying approaches to adoption, it becomes apparent that the contrasts between the cultural and familial perspectives of the Semitic …

Normative Failure In Blackburn's Ruling Passions, William R. Porter '05 Apr 2005

Normative Failure In Blackburn's Ruling Passions, William R. Porter '05

Honors Projects

In Ruling Passions, Simon Blackburn advances an ethical theory that welds his quasi-realism to a Humean-Smithean theory of moral sentiments. This paper concerns the latter Humean side of Blackburn's theory, specifically Blackburn's attempt to provide a normative ethical theory. This attempt largely involves getting over the tallest obstacle to any defender of Hume: the famous sensible knave problem.

Postcolonial Melodrama : The Satanic Verses, The Mimic Men, The Namesake, Jason Przybylski Apr 2005

Postcolonial Melodrama : The Satanic Verses, The Mimic Men, The Namesake, Jason Przybylski

Honors Theses

The goal of this project is to explain the appropriateness of the genre of melodrama for understanding postcolonial literature. Throughout this paper I examine how reading postcolonial fiction as melodrama may help us both to understand postcolonial issues in new ways and, at the same time, to grasp how postcolonial literature changes and enhances the notion of melodrama.

Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman Apr 2005

Treasuring Identity : Subject-Object Relations In Beowulf, Becky Workman

Honors Theses

Beowulfs introspection leads him to seek glory and wealth to preserve his memory after death. Unlike the battles against Grendel and Grendel's mother, Beowulfs actions against the dragon clearly prioritize the winning of treasure over the safety of the people. Beowulf seems to believe that revenge upon the dragon is a justification for risking not only his life, but the stability of the leadership of his nation. The hoard that he wins illustrates how material objects are not necessarily longer lasting or more stable than mortals. Treasure's intimate connection with the human body in the social structure of the community …

The Performative Letter, From Medieval To Modern, Michael Heyman Apr 2005

The Performative Letter, From Medieval To Modern, Michael Heyman

Faculty Works

Sometimes letters seem to behave badly. They can be eaten, in alphabet soup and Alphabits™ cereal; they can build structures unrelated to letters, with wooden alphabet blocks; they can be a physical impediment or challenge, as with the alphabet superhero "Letterman" on The Electric Company who, in Superman-style, used to leap a capital T and run "faster than a rolling O"; they can even become abstract art, as in the urban institution of "tagging," or signing a name in outlandish, highly stylized and often-unrecognizable graffiti letters. While these functions of letters may seem counter to what might be taught in …

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez Apr 2005

Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology Of Poopreport.Com, Marisol Cortez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In engaging with the culture of filth, Marisol Cortez's Brown Meets Green: The Political Fecology of PoopReport.com questions contemporary cultural criticism's emphasis on shit's textual ambivalence. In order to avoid relapsing into either the Bakhtinian celebration of the grotesque or the too narrowly conceived Kristevan category of the abject, Cortez argues, and to find a way out of this theoretical dualism, one must rethink the very categories of filth and waste through an ecocritical reading of the scatological -- the meeting of brown and green -- performed at the confluence of ecology, cultural studies, and Marxist political economy. This perspective …

Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, And Cultures Of The Screen, Christine Scodari, Becky Mulvaney Apr 2005

Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, And Cultures Of The Screen, Christine Scodari, Becky Mulvaney

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Christine Scodari's and Becky Mulvaney's Nothing's Gonna Give? Age, Gender, and Cultures of the Screen investigates the 2003 romantic comedy Something's Gotta Give, written and directed by Nancy Meyers as exceptional in its featuring a fifty-something woman as leading actress. Beginning with an analysis of the filmic text itself, the authors do not confine themselves to it, but go on to critically engage with its reception in both the press and academia. While the focus is thus shifted from the film to the meta- and para-texts produced in the course of its reception and promotion, the underlying questions asked …

On Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'S Player Piano, Davin Heckman Apr 2005

On Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'S Player Piano, Davin Heckman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

I always get suspicious when a book I'm looking for is hard to find. If I'm feeling paranoid in a post-Patriot Act sort of way, I imagine vast memory holes being stuffed with the writings of people like George Orwell and Philip K. Dick by legions of aspiring yuppies-- fit, good-looking, and totally uninterested in anything that requires reading. A gaggle of Cheneyesque men do a walkthrough, to make sure that they are destroying our intellectual heritage efficiently, and to remind them all that if they destroy enough knowledge, they might get promoted (even as the suits make …

Seeing Beyond The Illusion: Dispelling The Grand Illusion Hypothesis, Melissa A. Ebbers Apr 2005

Seeing Beyond The Illusion: Dispelling The Grand Illusion Hypothesis, Melissa A. Ebbers

Masters Theses

The Grand Illusion hypothesis is a new form of skepticism about the nature of our visual experience: it seems to us as though our vision is everywhere detailed, distinct, continuous, in color, even “photograph-like,” but it is not. This position is motivated by developments in perceptual research, which have revealed new information about the functional structure of the visual system as well as the attention-dependent nature of perception.

My project is primarily deconstructive. I argue that the Grand Illusion hypothesis rests on problematic assumptions (motivated by the results from the relevant perceptual research), which ultimately leads to an incoherent formulation …

Three Violin Sonatas By Twentieth Century Mexican Composers: An Alternative To The Standard Violin Literature With Pedagogical Application, Martha Placeres Apr 2005

Three Violin Sonatas By Twentieth Century Mexican Composers: An Alternative To The Standard Violin Literature With Pedagogical Application, Martha Placeres

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The project "Three Violin Sonatas by Twentieth Century Mexican Composers: an Alternative to the Standard Violin Literature with Pedagogical Application" has as its objectives to introduce violin music by Mexican composers to the community of the Rio Grande Valley, to demonstrate how these works can become part of the standard violin repertoire, and to develop pedagogical strategies for teaching these pieces.

To start this project, it was necessary to choose and incorporate the following composers: Manuel Maria Ponce Cuellar because he is the most known and prolific composer in Mexico and also well-known around the world; Blas Galindo Dimas because …
