Historical evidence contends that as a country, Ghana (formally the Gold Coast) had not need for a pidgin. Additionally, the colonial administration made deliberate attempts to acknowledge and teach Standard English, exclusively, in school, as a result of these factors, there is a minimal need to speak Pidgin in Ghana, as compared to Standard English; further, it is not socially considered an attractive option for interpersonal communication as it is in other West African countries, particularly, Nigeria. Error As Means To Discovery, Kevin C. Elliott

This paper argues, first, that recent studies of experimentation, most notably by Deborah Mayo, provide the conceptual resources to describe scientific discovery’s early stages as error-probing processes. Second, it shows that this description yields greater understanding of those early stages, including the challenges that they pose, the research strategies associated with them, and their influence on the rest of the discovery process. Throughout, the paper examines the phenomenon of ‘‘chemical hormesis’’ (i.e., anomalous low-dose effects from toxic chemicals) as a case study that is important not only for the biological sciences but also for contemporary public policy. Cho Yonggi’S Charismatic Leadership And Church Growth, David S. Lim

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

As the founding and senior pastor of the largest megachurch in the world so far, it is quite obvious that Rev. Dr. Cho Yonggi (hereafter, Cho) has been an effective leader of church growth (CG) in Korea and the world. How was he able to lead the Yoido Full Gospel Church (YFGC) to achieve such phenomenal growth? I am greatly honored to have been invited to present this paper that will focus on his personal charisma as one of the key factors that brought about such a development in church history.

My question is what we can learn from Dr. Cho’s experience and writings about the role of leadership of Christian communities in Church growth. It is quite legitimate to do this as there are precedents in Christian history to characterize a movement of God by the writings and activities of a leader – there are Lutheran churches and Wesleyan churches. We are meeting to reflect on what characterizes a Choian church.

One cannot address the topic of Lay Equipping Leadership and Church Growth without reference to the cell group structure that is so integral to the growth of Yoido Full Gospel Church. In order to do justice to the topic I would need to have spent several months interviewing lay leaders, sharing in their training program, and visiting cell groups. As it is I have only visited three cell groups, and that was during my visit to Yoido cin 1985 celebrating the tenth year of the present sanctuary, when we occupied the enlarged building for the first time.

Second Language Acquisition (Sla) And English Language Teaching (Elt), Saksit Saengboon

In this paper, the author discusses second language acquisition (SLA) as it pertains to English language teaching (ELT) in the Thai context. First, he presents the definitions of SLA and ELT. Second, based on a review of selected SLA theories, he provides insights into a long-standing problem i.e. why a few Thais succeed and many fail in learning English. In doing so, he provides a characterization, of ELT in Thailand. He concludes the paper by suggesting trends in research and teaching vis-a-vis English language teaching in Thailand.

This paper presents the results of a culture-oriented quantitative analysis of three series of English textbooks approved for use at secondary school level (Mathayom 4-6) by the Thai Ministry of Education— Snapshot 1-3, Speed Up to the World Outside 1-3, and Weaving It Together 1-3—all three textbook series being international editions not specifically designed and adapted for Thai learners of English. A Survey Of Writing Techniques, Authorship, Tenses, Voices, And Length Of Opening Sentences Of Medical Research Articles, Phan Banpho

A large number of genre analyses have investigated schematic units or "moves" of many parts of medical research articles. The present analysis deals with the inner element of the first move, the introduction, section. It explore the techniques for writing opening sentences, and investigates authorship, tenses, voices, and sentence length. The subjects were 167 opening sentences from two world journals in medical science, the Annals of Internal Medicine and The Lancet, which represent American English and British English, respectively. A concordancing computer program. Microsoft Word, and the SPSS (v. 11.5) were used. The findings of this study suggest that most …
