The story of British combined operations is one too often overlooked in the study of World War II. For the Allies, success, perhaps survival, could only be achieved by developing and perfecting the techniques and equipment required for amphibious landings. In British parlance, the marrying of the ground, naval, and air components of such a landing was called combined operations. The organization built to accomplish this task was the Directorate for Combined Operations (DCO). Created in a time of great desperation (July 1940), the DCO represented the first and only ground offensive tool in the British arsenal, employing the legendary …

In 1947, historian George Sarton questioned the place of alchemy in the history of science. He was not unlike many historians, who even attacked scholars of the subject, characterizing them as "fabulous creatures" who "seem to be under the wrath of God themselves" and who "become tinctured with the kind of lunacy they set out to describe." For decades, critics fought hard to keep alchemy out of the history of science. Instead, the emphasis of the Scientific Revolution centered on the mathematical sciences, focusing mainly on the intellectual development from Copernicus to Newton and highlighting astronomy and the studies of …

Thirty years ago only baseball aficionados and some African Americans were very familiar with the existence of the all-black Negro League baseball teams. Since then, the general public has been made more and more aware of these teams and their histories. Surely, though, these teams had more importance for the black community than to simply represent a "blip" on the cultural radar of African Americans. In the halcyon days of the "Roaring Twenties," the darkest days of the Great Depression, and the most fearsome days of World War II, these teams existed. A variety of music therapy approaches and techniques for working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders have evolved out of the creativity of the profession, the influence of different music therapy approaches, as well as the influences of other treatment and educational theories. This study includes a review of the music therapy literature concerning this population as well as a description of common educational programs and other treatment techniques influential in this field. In February of 1980, Joe Kohn arrived in my dorm room at Saint Bonaventure University where I was then a freshman. For the next several months we talked about my planned bicycle trip across the United States, recounted his own ride to Brazil, and uncovered dark stories from his three years in Zaire. One night he told me of an idea he had: He planned to canoe the entire length of the Congo River alone. For the following year or so, we mapped routes and studied the dangers. Imagery is often defined as language that appeals to the senses. Imagery, however, is the meat of any poem, and going beyond this simplistic definition. One of the most important functions of imagery is to help establish tone, and relationship between imagery and tone enables a poem to describe, declare, assert, or imagine-to use voices that are objective, personal, opinionated, or wildly speculative.

Tonally, the poems were aggressive, and something had to temper their edge. I went to the other extreme, looking to the most basic function of imagery-description. Obviously, all poems are, on some level, descriptive. Descriptive imagery is …

Reparations, my first collection of poems, is a book in which I pay homage to my African ancestors by striving, through poetry, to repair the spiritual, mental, and physical damage that I have experienced and continue to experience via personal and societal ideologies. Though Reparations cannot totally restore me, I believe poetry can aid my efforts at self-restoration and help me honor my ancestors, their determination to overcome all odds. I believe Reparations can work to provide some repair because the act of writing a poem forces the poet to reflect on his or her life.

Fire and Ice is comprised of five stories, each of which features a female protagonist at a crossroads in her life. Each of these women pursues a quest for personal fulfillment in the face of her shifting familial and emotional landscape. The stories deal primarily with domestic issues, such as childbearing, marital relationships, aging parents and personal faith. Though each woman feels alone in her individual incidence of alienation and loss, the stories imply the universality of each of these life-altering situations. Social cognitive theory explains the role that one's level of confidence plays in the accomplishment of a specific task. According to Bandura (1982, 1995), self-efficacy beliefs should align with performance. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among reading/writing self-efficacy beliefs and reading/writing standardized placement test scores of diverse community college freshmen. Additionally, this study sought to understand the sources of these students' reading/writing self-efficacy beliefs through the descriptions of experiences they feel have influenced those beliefs.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether or not watching sexually explicit music videos will affect how different women are perceived in different situations. There were 301 subjects recruited from Old Dominion University. The mean age was 20.5 and there were 189 women and 111 men. The participants watched two music videos and rated the main performer in the music video. Next, they watched an interview video and rated the person in the interview. The interview video featured one woman who was either African-American or Caucasian, and that woman was interviewing for either a job or a potential …
