Central to Goethe's ballad, "Der Gott und die Bajadere" ["The God and the Bailadeira"] are two Indian customs: l) the tradition of the "Devadasi" in local Hindu temples and 2) the tradition of "Sati" (= wife) immolation, both cultural practices now forbidden by law but still practiced in some parts of India.

Professor Vicente Cabrera, who now teaches at the University of Minnesota, Morris has just published a new novel, La sombra del espia, which has received wide acclaim in Ecuador. This work is a cross-cultural tale of spies, drug-traffickers and typewriters. Two other novels, published previously are: La Noche del Te, which has mental illness as its theme, and El Gaban, which describes a student and a serious political uprising. A fourth novel is in the works: El Hortelano de Ulba, which treats a mixed-race Hispano and American theme.

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner

Byatt's short fiction, from her first collection Sugar and Other Stories (1987) to Elementals (1998) is marked by a continuous preoccupation with the body: the body as the product of social signifying practices, the body as the site of desires, fears, and anxieties, the body as the source of experience, the body as creator and created. In brief, the body is treated as the centre of existence, consciousness and identity. Yet, these are constantly called into doubt in Byatt's stories, which depict heroines trapped between asserting their identity and submitting to cultural dictates of beauty and behavior. In …

When America's Top 40 starts counting down, are those best-sellers of popular music the results of clever top-down marketing ploys and mass-psyche machinations, or do those lists reflect vox populi, making itself heard with its purchasing dollars above the din of preplanned propaganda? Kathleen E.R. Smith doesn't seem to care. Perhaps it isn't her place to consider such possibly unsolvable questions.
