Allow me to write frankly about the “P”-word. There is great concern about the proliferation of the “P”-word. In the past decade, over 1,500 articles and 2,000 books have come into print bearing the "P"-word in their titles. Nearly 1,000 of these books are still in print. Everywhere we turn we find that we have been inundated with the “P”-word. And so we have come to fear for our culture. The "P"-word? “Postmodernism.”

Imagine a code of ethics that advocated shady business practices and that the organization proposing the code came under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. Imagine further, that the investigation came to trial and the stance taken by the organization was found to be illegal by the highest court of the land. Such a scenario, if true, would raise a host of questions about codes of professional ethics, not the least of which would be “What value, if any, do codes of ethics have for the teaching of ethics?”

The article aims to develop the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas as a valuable new perspective in understanding the triune drama of the Resurrection. Firstly, the juxtaposition of Levinas’ thought and Christian theology will be argued for, followed by a development of von Balthasar’s Trinitarian theology of the Resurrection. Especially, Levinas’ non-phenomenological notion of “otherness” will be used to offer an understanding of the Risen Christ’s “Otherness” as communicating the non-phenomenality of Holy Saturday to the disciples. Faithful to the Talmudic tradition and seared by the experience of the Shoah, Levinas’s life work is both a polemic against Christianity and a proclamation of the Christianity envisaged by Matt 25. His writings inevitably touch on theological themes central to Christian tradition. The author examines four of these – God and love of neighbour, the paschal theme, cosmology, and Eucharist – to show how Levinas can throw new light on these mysteries of our faith, a light that shines from the crucible of kenotic love, both human and divine.

The commentary begins: Jeffrey Stout and Stanley Hauerwas have long been friends and conversation partners. One would not know that from reading Stout’s “Not of This World” (October 10). Nor does one emerge from Stout’s essay with an accurate sense of Hauerwas’s position.

Stout’s presentation is incomplete in many ways. For example, he labels Hauerwas’s ethic as “perfectionist,” implying that it is, in the words of the article’s title, unrealistic or “not of this world.” However, Stout fails to mention Hauerwas’s untiring emphasis on human sinfulness and-most crucially- the subsequent centrality of the practices of forgiveness and reconciliation. This is the first of the series of final reports on the excavations at the Hellenistic city of Maresha, and documents the work in the extensive man-made subterranean complexes below the lower city during the 1980s. Three subterranean complexes are presented here (70, 21, 44–45), including the study of their architecture, pottery and small finds and the industries that took place there. Chapters 1 and 2 present the setting of the site and review previous excavations, while Chapter 9 summarizes all the data in order to present a human face for the finds uncovered here.

American composer Miriam Gideon (1906-1996) is highly recognized for her vocal chamber music and her contribution to the Jewish Synagogue service. Her musical style has been described as both lyrical and expressionistic, highly engaging, with strong prevalence of dissonance and chromaticism. This study examines Miriam Gideon's cantata The Habitable Earth from a conductor's point of view. Its purpose is to increase familiarity with the work among choral musicians. The study offers detailed analysis and suggestions for performance procedures, which may also be used for understanding other twentieth century choral works. On March 15, 1939, Germany, also known as The Third Reich, invaded Czechoslovakia in what has historically been recognized as a precipitating event leading to the beginning of World War II. The Third Reich, as the aggressor, expanded its efforts from Germany to remove all Jewish People and Jewish influences from Europe. In order to accomplish this objective, the Third Reich built concentration camps as containment centers for the Jewish people. These containment camps were extermination centers with locations at: Treblinka, Belzec, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Wülzburg, Sobibor and other locations. Reminiscent of E. Stanley Jones's technique of utilizing a roundtable for religious dialogue, Timothy C. Tennent's Christianity st the Religious Roundtable seeks to engage Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim ideas on issues he regards as central to interreligious dialogue. In addition to the doctrine of supreme reality, which he treats in connection with all three traditions, he adds chapters on the topics of the doctrine of creation (Hindu), ethics (Buddhist) and Christ and Incarnation (Muslim). The primary focus of this thesis is the development, implementation, and results of a multi-billion dollar electronic anti-personnel barrier that once divided North and South Vietnam during America's involvement in the Vietnam War, a conflict that pitted the strongest nation on earth against one of the weakest.

United States participation in the Vietnam War lasted from 1959 to 1975 in one degree or another and conservatively cost the world more than two million lives, among them almost 57,000 Americans, two million Vietnamese, 1.5 million Cambodians, several hundred thousand Laotians, and a smaller number of Thais, Filipinos, Australians, New Zealanders, Chinese, …

The story behind my work on the biography of Elder Neal A. Maxwell actually began in 1976, when he invited me to take leave from Brigham Young University and work for two years under his daily direction in the new Correlation Department at Church headquarters. In later years, when I was an administrator and a teacher at Ricks College and then at BYU, I saw him often in Church Educational System meetings, where he was a key figure on the Church Board of Education.
