Pathamasambodhi is widespread in at least 5 countries in Southeast Asia. Hundreds of manuscripts and not less than 10 versions have been discovered.They are composed in 4 languages: Pāli, Mon, Cambodian and Tai, including Tai vernaculars: Siamese Thai, Northern Thai, Northeastern Thai, Lao, Tai Lue, and Tai Khoeun. The styles of composition dramatically vary between detailed enumeration and concision, prose and verse, translation in the style of nissaya and non-nissaya, single language and dual languages- Pāli and another language. The comparative study of the different versions, with emphasis on their content, reveals their relation and the evolution of Pathamasambodhi. The …

This essay describes the emerging public discourse on Bangkok's urban and architectural transformations in print media from the reign of Rama V. It discusses and compares different representations and visions of the civilizing city that were architectured by three groups of publishing elites: the royal elite, the commoner intellectuals, and the Westerners. In April 1869, the Siam Repository had printed an editorial article titled "Bangkok, Siam. As It Is." The Repository's editor was an American missionary, Samuel J. Smith, and the first half of the article was a typical description of the capital city of this "heathen country." The flat …

The paper is an attempt to investigate the concept of harmony between nature and man expressed in Thai poetry from the past to the present to see to what extent this concept has persisted through the change of time and to what extent it has changed. The texts of Thai poetry selected for the study are poetical works of Prince Dhammadhibet of the Ayudhya period, Inao by King Rama II of the Rattanakosin period and the contemporary works of Angkhan Kalayanapong, especially the text of Ya, or Grandma. Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha

This paper examines Thai-English code-switching by eight Thai students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa by taking into account Bell's audience design factors (Bell 1984), speech accommodation theory (Giles & Smith 1979; Giles & Coupland 1991), and other psychosocial factors. Code-switching is defined here as an alternation between one language and another made by a speaker within a sentence, sentences, or a conversation. This paper proposes that code-switching is essentially an accommodative phenomenon; that is, speakers will switch into one language if they think it is appropriate to the topic or to their notions of self and addressee. The Mixing Of English And Thai In Thai Television Program, Prathana Kannaovakun, Albert C. Gunther

This study set out to systemically observe and describe the mixing of English with Thai-based discourse, often termed code-mixing, in Thai television programs. Data came from 100 hours of programming randomly samples from five genres of Thai television programs - Thai drama, talk or variety shows, academic or hard talk shows, game shows and sports programs. Finding showed that code-mixing is common, with sports programs producing the most. A great number of code-mixing were single nouns. English mixes occurred even when Thai equivalents existed. A few were used for emphasis or clarification, but most were not. Celebrities produced the most …

In his article on the relationships among literature, culture, and the history of a people, "Literature and the Historian," R. Gordon Kelly discusses the legitimacy and validity of using literary texts as historical evidence. He states that a literary text can serve as indicator of several social parameters of a culture and of a people who produce and selectively preserve it. Because literary works are cultural products, they should, therefore, be understood in the context of the cultures for which they are intended. In the Bangkok period, the literary classic Ramakian has been reproduced again and again, either in literary forms or performing arts. This literary piece has been reinvented many times, particularly in the course of cultural crisis so as to demonstrate the glory of Thai culture. Although Ramakian is still able to be seen in the form of traditional theatre, i.e., khon (a masked dance-drama) in particular, it was also re-created in modern theatrical form during the mid-1990s, during which a cultural campaign was promoted by the government. The paper seeks to explore how peasant women are portrayed in Vietnamese literature and tries to highlight that, throughout the development of Modern Vietnamese literature, the way in which peasant women are portrayed is closely related to political agendas and ideological struggles. It also proposes that the construction of peasant women in Vietnamese literature is not only gender-based, but also class-bound. In the period between 1930 and 1945, the victimization of peasant women was used as a tool to criticise the colonial administration. Social and historical dimensions in literary studies may be different from those of social scientists. Literature not only records social experiences of a writer as an individual, but also generates his/her reactions to social changes that he/she has confronted. Since Thailand's first Social and Economic Plan during Marshal Sarit Thanarat's regime in the 1960's, Thai governments has geared national "development" to material growth and superstructures, by promoting the slogans such as "flowing water, electric lighting and good transportation." Talmy's influential typology of verb-framed / satellite-framed languages has recently been shown to be insufficient (Strömquist and Verhoeven 2003), in particular with respect of serial-verb languages (Zlatev and Yangklang 2004; Slobin 2003). In this paper, we compare motion event constructions in three languages, where two are clear representatives of Talmy's two types: French and Swedish, and the third is a serial-verb language, Thai. As expected, Thai turns out to resemble French in some respects, Swedish in others but also to possess structural (i.e. syntactic and semantic) characteristics which distinguish it from the two Talmian types. A word list of 3,343 items with Standard Thai, English and Vietnamese glosses was used for eliciting the Black Tai or Tai Dam language data at each of the twelve research sites: ten in northern Vietnam, one in northern Laos, and one in central Thailand. The data collected at two villages in Muong Vat could not be used for a reconstruction of Old Black Tai phonological system and a lexicon because on a phonological basis and a lexical basis, the Tai dialect of Muong Vat is not Black Tai, especially the one spoken at Ban Phat, Chieng Pan sub-district and …
