The George Eliot Memorial Garden in Nuneaton reached its half century in May 2002. In 1930 several literary men, amongst them George Bernard Shaw, were asked if Nuneaton should erect a memorial to George Eliot. Most of them expressed astonishment that one was not already in existence. They may have been even more amazed to discover that it would be another twenty-two years before one appeared, for it was not until 1952 that the George Eliot Memorial Garden was established.

Remembering the autobiographical nature of much of Barrett Browning's early work, his comment is not surprising. But it has a more general relevance for nineteenth-century women writers. The charge that they could only write of what they knew, and that what they knew best was themselves, was made regularly by reviewers. I thought that I would talk today about a previously unexplored topic - George Eliot and cats. Unfortunately, I find that the reason why the topic is previously unexplored is that George Eliot, unlike the other Eliot, had very little, or possibly nothing, to say about cats. There may have been the odd un-named farm cat lurking about in Adam Bede, but nothing on which one could construct a ten-minute talk in the open air.

The finances of the Association for Documentary Editing are sound. 91 There has been a decrease in the general budget of $377, giving us unrestricted assets totaling $59,706. This year's slight reduction is mitigated by the large increase from last year ($7,401), and that large overage partly explains the present showing. A portion of the money for last year's conference in Washington, D.C., was received before the fiscal year began, so those monies were reported for the year in which they were received rather than across two years. Charles W. Polzer, S.J., died in Los Gatos, CA on Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at age 72. Dr. Polzer was born in San Diego, where he attended St. Augustine High School. Upon graduation from Santa Clara University in 1952, he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos, CA. His course of studies took him to St. Louis University, MO, and Alma College of Santa Clara University, in Los Gatos, CA. Following his ordination into the priesthood in Los Angeles in 1964, he undertook a period of post-ordination studies in Cordoba, Spain. From 1958 to 1961, while studying for the priesthood, …

The death of George Eliot on 22 December 1880 occasioned many prose obituaries and also a number of verse tributes.' I have located eleven of these in all, along with a twelfth poem published in her lifetime: nine poets are represented, of whom four are women and five men (assuming J. S. Dawson and 'K. G.' to be male). Together, the poems provide a sidelight on her reputation. The recent appearance of a Dutch translation of Middlemarch, in a prestigious series of classics by a leading publishing house, may well be considered as constituting 'cultural justice', and it is justice long overdue. Ever since the mid-nineteenth century, there has been a flourishing market for English literature in the Netherlands, in the original as well as in translation. Of recent years, publishing practice has been carefully to coordinate publication of translations with that of English editions, for once an English novel is available, there is hardly a market for translations. George Eliot's famous digression on the nature of literary realism in chapter 17 of Adam Bede has long been understood as a kind of aesthetic manifesto for the Victorian novel. Much has been written on Eliot's insistence that a faithful narrative representation of reality must take account of low and middle life, much as Dutch genre painting seeks to imitate quotidian life in all its prosaic detail. What has attracted virtually no attention in discussions of Eliot's ideas on realism, however, is the central importance of comic theory to her realist aesthetic.' The "Unidentified Pioneers": An Analysis Of Staffordshire Mormons, 1837 To 1870, Stephen G. Arrowsmith

The evidence presented in this thesis advocates an increased level of scholarly interest in English working-class Mormon converts. To illustrate who these people were, and what their roles were as part of Mormon story, this regional study introduces and makes available over twelve hundred Staffordshire Mormons, and asks questions of the collected statistical information. The conservative Staffordshire Mormons clearly assisted the establishment, and continuation, off a Zion in the American West. Much of the data confirms previous scholarship; however, those with “differing visions” of Mormonism (for example, the RLDS Church) attracted Staffordshire converts in larger numbers than previously suggested. The Synergistic Leadership Theory: Contextualizing Multiple Realities Of Female Leaders, Genevieve Brown, Beverley J. Irby

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The authors describe the Synergistic Leadership Theory (SLT), which includes four factors: Leadership Behavior, Organizational Structure, External Factors, and Beliefs, Attitudes, and Values. The factors are described and contributions to existing leadership theory are explained. They further apply the factors to four cases in order to illustrate the application of the theory to leadership practice. The authors conclude that SLT, in including the female perspective, provides an expanded framework for taking a macro-perspective of the interactions among beliefs, external forces, people, and organizations.

Standing at the crossroads: Next steps for high-achieving women was written to address the changes occurring for woman managers. Rudennan and Ohlott, professionals in the field of leadership development, noted that significant changes occurred for women managers from the 1980s to the 1990s. They observed two changes: First, although the number of women in top positions stayed low, the number in mid level positions grew significantly. Second, the issues for women changed from concern about "gaining access to the boardroom to gaining comfort in the personal life choices associated with a managerial career" (p. 2). Multi-case study methodology was used to explore the experiences of five women from five different decades who became pregnant as unmarried teens. This historical view was developed by interviewing paI1icipants about family. social. and cultural contexts in which the event occurred. A clearer understanding of teen pregnancy resulted when the participants' stories were triangulated with decade literature. Four themes emerged: How They Got There. What Followed. Lifelong Impact, and Literature Over Time. In 1876 the bilingual Cherokee diplomat and lawyer William Penn Adair expressed great pride in the level of "civilization" that his nation had achieved. Defining civilization as commercial agriculture, literacy, Christianity, and republican government, Adair believed that his society had reached a sophistication that equaled and in certain areas surpassed that of the United States.
