Census 2000 data include changes in the way people were counted. The most significant change is to allow persons to select more than one race, creating a new multiracial category of “two or more races”, but meaning people may not be included in the race with which they most identify. There was, however, no way to choose more than one ethnicity; one must choose either Latino or not. Throughout this profile, numbers reflect Latinos of all races, or non-Latinos by race, with persons of two or more races counted separately. The Gutnius Lutheran Church (GLC) is one of two Lutheran churches in the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea, the other Lutheran church being the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea. This brief review of the geographical, cultural and political settings of Papua New Guinea (PNG) will provide the physical context in which the Gutnius Lutheran Church and the theological education programs, which this study will examine, developed.

Effects Of Bilingualism, Noise, And Reverberation On Speech Perception By Listeners With Normal Hearing, Dashielle M. Febo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The accurate perception of spoken English is influenced by many variables, including the listener's native language, reverberation, and background noise. Few studies of speech perception by bilingual listeners have carefully controlled for second language proficiency and even fewer have presented speech in everyday listening environments that contain noise and reverberation. In the present study, detailed language background, language proficiency information, and individual language samples were collected and the speech stimuli were presented in a variety of quiet, noisy, and reverberant listening environments.

Technology And Learning By Factory Workers: The Stretch-Out At Lowell, 1842, James Bessen

In 1842 Lowell textile firms increased weaving productivity by assigning three looms per worker instead of two. This marked a turning point. Before, weavers at Lowell were temporary and mostly literate Yankee farm girls; afterwards, firms increasingly hired local residents, including illiterate and Irish workers. An important factor was on-the-job learning. Literate workers learned new technology faster, but local workers stayed longer. These changes were unprofitable before 1842, and the advantages of literacy declined over time. Firm policy and social institutions slowly changed to permit deeper human-capital investment and more productive implementation of technology

Nutrient Uptake By Seagrass Communities And Associated Organisms: Impact Of Hydrodynamic Regime Quantified Through Field Measurements And Use Of An Isotope Label, Christopher David Cornelisen

Seagrass communities are composed of numerous organisms that depend on water-column nutrients for metabolic processes. The rate at which these organisms remove a nutrient from the water column can be controlled by physical factors such as hydrodynamic regime or by biological factors such as speed of enzyme reactions. The impact of hydrodynamic regime on rates of nutrient uptake for seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) communities and for organisms that comprise the community (seagrass, epiphytes, phytoplankton, and microphytobenthos) was quantified in a series of field flume experiments employing the use of ¹⁵N-labeled ammonium and nitrate.

It is all over the papers, the television news, and the talk shows. Toni Smith, the Manhattanville College senior basketball player has been turning her back on the flag during the playing of the national anthem for the past several weeks. In recent days as America gears up for a war the protest against her protest has been growing. Last weekend Toni Smith was confronted on the floor by a Vietnam veteran toting an American flag that he shoved in her face.
