This manuscript is an analysis of artistic growth as well as an attempt to document the creative process during this stage of growth. The production herein discussed was an excerpted version of A Midsummer Night's Dream ; however, the process of conceiving and staging the piece was identical to the process of producing an interpretation of the complete text. This memoir explores my relationships with my father, my brother and my children. My dad was my baseball coach, football coach, history tutor. But he drank too much. At times, he became violent. My mom left him, and he went into years of drunken insanity.

As teenagers, my brother, Craig, and I responded to the disintegration of our family by embracing life on the street. Over the next four years, we made a series of bad decisions that led us deeper into drugs and violence, but we stuck together. Craig's violent behavior increased and began to scare even me, but …

Outside Chicago is a manuscript based on my recollections of my childhood community of Burnham, Illinois. In the process of writing this manuscript it occurred to me that I have always tried to separate myself from any association with that community. When I left for college and then graduate school, I was ashamed of where I came from, but could not rid myself of the mentality or ethics the community gave me. Robbins and Cooper share their experiences while developing a collaborative initiatives for English education. Collaboration was performed through the construction of shared languages and activities based on understandings of social action and used of postmodern mapping and boundary interrogation for critiquing and directing social interactions.

Among objections to naturalist views of human persons like Animalism and the Constitution View are two that concern alleged ethical implications. One criticism is that such views are defective because they lack the metaphysical resources to generate moral obligations or moral expectations to protect life, in either its early or late stages. Another objection relies on the claim that any metaphysical view of human persons according to which some human organisms lack the property of personhood has horrendous moral implications. With respect to the first objection I argue that resources metaphysically neutral with respect to dualism and naturalism about persons …

Concepts Of Despair In Walker Percy's The Moviegoer, James Alan Finney

Honors Theses

This paper explores the concept of despair in Walker Percy's 1962 National Book Award winning novel The Moviegoer. It explores the philosophy of Kierkegaard's The Sickness unto Death as an important antecedent of the novel's portrayal of Binx Bolling's existential crisis. Additionally, the paper discusses Walker Percy's own thought about the devaluation of subjective experience in a modem scienctific world. Using these concepts as a vocabulary, the paper performs a reading of the text of the novel. The text asserts that the reader's own valuation of God and objectivity determine the possiblity or nonpossibility of Binx 's salvation by faith.

This oral history interview, conducted on March 31, 2003, features Joseph Santiago, Ward 14 Councilman and a resident of Tremont. Santiago reflects on his childhood experiences growing up in Tremont, highlighting the strong sense of community, family values, and the challenges faced by the neighborhood, including economic hardships and urban changes. He discusses his parents' immigrant background, his work experiences, and the impact of local and national events on his life. Santiago also describes his involvement in community activism, emphasizing his efforts to preserve and revitalize the Tremont area, and his commitment to continuing this work in the future.

Mr. Estrada recalls a recruitment/processing center for braceros in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México, called El Trocadero; the hiring process there was easier if your name was already on the county’s list; another center for braceros was located in Dell City, Texas; ranchers came here and hired braceros; legal and illegal workers were hired at the same time, but illegal workers received fewer wages; in their free time, the workers would go to the movies; sometimes the ranchers would give them rides on their planes for $2.00.

Behavioral characterization of animal models for Alzheimer's Disease is critical for the development of potential therapeutics and treatments against the disease. While there are several known animal models of AD, three current models--APPsw, P301L, and APPsw+P301L--have not been well characterized, if at all. This study, therefore, aimed to perform a full behavioral characterization of these three models in order to better understand the impairments associated with each one. Between 5 and 8.5 months of age, animals were behaviorally tested in a variety of sensorimotor, anxiety, and cognitive tasks. The number of tau+ neurons in the forebrains of P301L mice was …

Perception Of Leadership Qualities In Higher Education: Impact Of Professor Gender, Professor Leader Style, Situation, And Participant Gender, Michela A. Larocca

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This experimental study used eight written vignettes to analyze the effects of professor gender, professor leadership style (democratic/autocratic), and type of situation (task/personal) and participant gender on evaluations of professorsʹ competence, likeability and masculinity characteristics. Undergraduates from the College of Arts and Science (N=932; Males=464, Females=467), and the College of Education (N=722; Males=140, Females=582) were used. Results indicated that research participants rated democratic professors significantly more competent, likeable, and more feminine than autocratic professors. Contrary to expectations derived from gender spill-over and gender congruency theories, male participants did not rate female professors more negatively than their male counterparts when they …

Firdaus Kanga was born in Bombay with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), a condition that prevented his bones from growing beyond a certain point. Also this condition meant that his bones had the potential of breaking easily. As a result, he spent most of his early years bedridden, not attending school, leaving his home only occasionally to attend the cinema with his family. It was not until he was nineteen that he obtained his first wheelchair. Kanga 's family expected him to become a solicitor, but he did not find his experiences in law school satisfying. Vaki l attended St. Mary's School and finished his schooling at The Doon School in the footh ills of the Himalayas before moving to Great Britain to take an English degree at Magdalene College in Cambridge. Intercourse As Discourse: The Calculus Of Objectification And Desire In The Novel And Film Versions Of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Russell J. Ganim

The calculus of objectifi cation and desire in both the novel and film versions of Choderlos de Laclos’s Liaisons dangereuses is derived in two principal ways. The first derivation, that of the Sadean will to objectify the other for erotic and intellectual satisfaction, precedes the second, that of the overarching wish to produce a written object announcing the conquest of the human object. Limited by the medium, the film adaptations of the Liaisons dangereuses cannot place as great an emphasis on the composition of letters. Nevertheless, they make allusions to it in such a manner that underscores this type of …
