Historia is a joint publication of Eastern Illinois University's History Department and the Epsilon Mu Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Edited entirely by EIU students, Historia is designed to offer undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to publish their work. Students who wish to work as Historia editors must enroll in HIS 4900 (Historical Publishing), which is offered each spring. Students who wish to submit articles or reviews for consideration are welcome to do so at any time.

Historia earned third place in Phi Alpha Theta's Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize competition in Division I in 2011.

Digital technology has had a significant impact on the ways in which music information can be stored, transmitted, and used. Within the information sciences, music information retrieval has become an increasingly important and complex field. This brief article is addressed primarily to those involved in the design and implementation of systems for storing and retrieving digital files containing musical notation, recorded music, and relevant metadata – hereinafter referred to as a Music Information Retrieval System (“MIRS”). African Americans And Land Loss In Texas: Government Duplicity And Discrimination Based On Race And Class, Debra A. Reid

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

"African American Farmers and Land Loss in Texas," surveys the ways that discrimination at the local, state, and national levels constrained minority farmers during the twentieth century. It considers the characteristics of small-scale farming that created liabilities for landowners regardless of race, including state and federal programs that favored commercial and agribusiness interests. In addition to economic challenges African American farmers had to negotiate racism in the Jim Crow South. The Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the state branch of the USDA's Extension Service, segregated in 1915. The "Negro" division gave black farmers access to information about USDA programs, but it …

General education is one of the glories of American higher education; it is one of its major headaches as well. The concern for general education highlights some of the distinctive virtues of American universities and colleges. First it illustrates the ability to be open to different traditions and to forge them into something new. Liberal education, the older and still widely used term for general education, is the bequest of British higher education where it was taught to an elite of young gentlemen, destined for careers in politics and the professions. Intensity And Color Of Language In Attitude Change And Emotion, Tomie Day Bankhead, Amy Bench, Trisha Peterson, Risa Place, John S. Seiter

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This study examined whether messages using or not using emotionally intense language combined with certain colors, i.e., red, white, or blue, to effect attitude change. Emotionally intense messages were more positively associated with attitude change than were those with low emotional intensity, but no interaction effects or main effects for color were found.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Individualistic values characterize contemporary society and many popular approaches to mental health treatment. This paper critiques the individualistic values embedded in the helping professions that implicity contradict the teachings of Jesus Christ, the surest foundation for mental health interventions. Members of AMCAP are encouraged to search out and replace problematic values that contradict gospel teachings which have been integrated into contemporary mental health practice.

On The Influence Of Jazz Rhythm In The Music Of Aaron Copland, Stanley V. Kleppinger

Surveys scholarly views of jazz's rhythmic and metrical structures in the 1920s (at the outset of Copland's career) focusing especially on Copland's own writings on the subject. Analyses of selected passages from Copland's piano concerto, the second piece of Four piano blues, the Piano variations, the piano sonata, the clarinet concerto, and Appalachian spring help to assess the ambiguity surrounding the identification of jazz-based rhythmic influences in Copland's music.
