As the Ruin Falls is a two-movement work scored for full orchestra, augmented with bass clarinet, piano, and three percussionists. Though the title comes from a poem written by C.S. Lewis, it is in no way is a programmatic representation of the poem's content. Furthermore, the programmatic "scenes" in the second movement do not relate to the poem. The title was selected only to signify the work's rather ominous character.

The primary musical building block for the entire work is a four-note chord whose construction is symmetrical - two minor thirds separated by a perfect fourth: C-Eb-Ab-Cb (or B). The …

Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg

Traditionally, steamboats and their history have belonged to the area of antiquarians. Many sources in my bibliography focus on the design and use of the boats and neglect the social and cultural impact the boats had on mid-Victorian London life. Steamboats, however, were an important transportation system in mid-Victorian London, so that a study of steamboats can provide an insight into mid-Victorian times. In this thesis, I will place steamboat design construction and use in the context of the social and cultural worlds of mid-Victorian London and the River Thames.

Reviews four major federal initiatives to improve early reading and literacy programs in the U.S.: Title One Reading program, the Reading Excellence Act, Even Start Family Literacy Program, and the Leave No Child Behind Act. Concludes that these expensive reading programs have not been very successful.

Official Declaration 2, tucked away quietly at the very tail end of the Doctrine and Covenants, is in many ways a fitting conclusion to the preface of the Doctrine and Covenants recorded 147 years before. In section 1 the Lord reveals much about the Restoration and about the divine pulley of the First Vision in particular. The term pulley emphasizes the two-way nature of the First Vision, for although Joseph prayed to know heaven's will, God "called upon" his servant to initiate the Restoration. In musical composition, a clash of cymbals signifies a dramatic moment in a passage. But its significance can vary. The force of brass plates can simply call attention to a phrase, voice, anthem, or transition in the arrangement. It can emphasize a thematic development, a musical notation anticipating a later twist or crescendo-or indicate that climax itself. It can signal a harmonious resolution of previous chords, or a rhapsody of dissonant voices. The incidence data provided by previous investigations of peripheral vestibulopathy in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are quite variable. This variability may be explained, in part, by the otologic history of the patients included in these studies. Specifically, patients with a prior history of other otologic disease and BPPV should be more likely to present with peripheral vestibulopathy than patients without no prior history of otologic disease and BPPV. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of peripheral vestibulopathy in these two groups of BPPV patients. Caloric responses were analyzed for two groups of patients …

บทความฉบับนี้วิเคราะห์นวนิยายรางวัลวรรณกรรมสร้างสรรค์ยอดเยี่ยมแห่งอาเซียนประจำปีพุทธศักราช 2546 ของประเทศไทย ของเดือนวาด พิมวนา เรื่อง ช่างสำราญ โดยมุ่ง วิเคราะห์เนื้อหาและลักษณะการนำเสนอ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ช่างสำราญ เลือกเสนอเนื้อหาชีวิต ของกลุ่มคนในชุมชมห้องแถวที่มีประสบการณ์ชีวิตธรรมดาสามัญ อันเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ได้รับการประเมินค่าว่าน่าสนใจน้อยกว่า ประสบการณ์ชีวิตกลางแจ้งที่เข้มข้นหรือประสบการณ์ชีวิตกลางคืนที่โชกโชน แต่ผู้เขียนเห็นว่าการค้นหาประเด็นและวิธีการใน การนำเสนอเป็นสิ่งที่สร้างความหมายให้กับประสบการณ์สามัญเหล่านี้ได้
