The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) was originally developed to increase the retention and improve the academic performance of underrepresented minority students at the University of Michigan. The program's history, components and expansion will be covered. This session should particularly benefit those interested in learning about the structure of the program or are interested in developing their own such program.

in the context of predominantly white institutions. In this paper concepts such as projection, projective identification, splitting, scapegoating, superiority and denial will be employed to illustrate why racial prejudice is a deeply-rooted collective psychological disorder that affects even educated mental health practitioners. Clinicians have an ethical responsibility to demonstrate cultural sensitivity and empathy when working with minority clients, colleagues, staff and students, to examine and root out their own prejudices, and to encourage others to do the same.

During March 2002 Oregon State University students took a non-traditional approach to learning about cross-cultural issues in Native America. The students lived five days in Burns, Oregon interacting with the Burns Paiute Tribe and non-Indian community stakeholders, thereby developing an understanding of the complex issues facing Oregon's Native American population.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 7th Annual National Conference (2002)

This session is an overview of the strategies developed and implemented for the successful retention of minority students attained via successful collaborative efforts in recruiting. Utilizing shared objectives, connecting units for joint recruiting and retention efforts and the strategic use of resources has increased the retention rate of participating students to over eighty-five percent.

In order to be successful at creating a welcoming and pluralistic climate, there must be proper attention paid to backlash. Understanding the underlying causes is the root of creating effective coping strategies. This workshop will suggest ways of understanding and dealing with this phenomenon.

This presentation describes Murray State University's proactive efforts to enhance African¬-American students' preparation, recruitment/retention and graduation. Strategies utilized to create and maintain a positive/hospitable campus environment will be delineated. It is our campus-wide responsibility to "nurture" each student with personalized contact and carefully selected services to engender degree persistence.

Solution-focused strategies are also presented.
