Organization Development is defined as change initiated by the top leadership of an organization, the change must be organization-wide, it is planned; it is designed to improve organizational health and effectiveness, and is implemented with the assistance of skills and interventions based in the behavioral sciences.

In 1992, the Department of Chemistry at Wayne State University developed an office to address the issue of minority student recruitment and retention in the sciences. The Initiative through the success of its programming revealed that minority student organizations were instrumental in student retention at both the college and pre-college levels. Moreover, an unintended consequence of this synergy is the recruitment of minority students to the university.

This proposed presentation will describe a qualitative study of the experiences of ten underrepresented students (African Americans, Chicanos, and Filipinos) of color who attend a public, selective, predominately white, research institution: the University of California, San Diego. More specifically, it will examine the effects of those students' participation in a summer bridge program on their "ease of transition" (Hurtado and Carter, 1997) and their academic and social integration during their freshmen year (Tinto, 1993). This presentation shares testimonies of successful strategies for recruitment and retention from ten faculty of color at a Midwestern mid-size predominately white university. The voices of Eastern Indian, Native American Indian, African American, Asian American, Mexican American, and Arab American faculty were solicited. Results are used to highlight the strategies these faculty members of color have used to integrate into a predominately white university.

Federal rules prohibited American Indian children attending boarding schools from using their native languages until the 1930's. Success would be more attainable for Indian students if the university implemented programs that acknowledge American Indian experience and contributions. Non-Indian students would also benefit from learning about the Indian experiences in United States history. Culturally relevant programming and a visible Native presence would increase both the quality of education and the university's retention of American Indian students.

For some time now, four year institutions have been circulating the myth that education equals a job upon graduation. Along with this myth, the university system makes it appear as if this equation works across the board, for minority graduates as well as majority group members. The lackluster manner in which the American high school is teaching students, combined with selective admission programs at a number of post-secondary institutions, combine to give the majority of American students an important option: the community college. Furthermore, the rising wave of conservatism and right wing ideology can best be countered if these two-year institutions became "liberation laboratories," and emphasized the humanities and social sciences, with emphasis on critical reading, critical writing and critical thinking, This paper outlines how such an emphasis, pedagogy and curriculum could be established at the nation's two-year institutions.

Over the past few years, there has been increasing evidence that eating disorders are occurring in racial minorities and ethnic minorities in increasing numbers. This presentation will look at the evidence supporting this trend. We will also look at how eating disorders differ in different racial groups and ethnic minorities. We will explore the issue of acculturation and ethnic and racial identity.

African-American faculty are extremely valuable contributors to their respective areas. They bring direct knowledge of the strengths and needs of their communities and serve as role models to aspiring students. Unfortunately some African-American faculty are not successful at getting promotion and or tenure in part because of a lack of mentors and or a lack of clarity regarding tenure criteria. This paper focuses on four issues that are relevant to the tenure process, namely, politics, the publication process, developing a research agenda and submission of the tenure "package".
