In this essay, I explore various dimensions of theoretical terms such as exile, nomadism, diaspora, and border. These terms have a temporal and spatial dimension. They are not equivalent to each other and they generate different kinds of identity narratives. In fact, in their strict definitions, as John Durham Peters demonstrates, they oppose each other. Yet, in contemporary texts, fiction and non- fiction, regardless of the individual experiences portrayed, they are also often intertwined. Since the publication of Vivre me tue in 1997, Paul Smaïl's published statements about the necessity for a "Beur" writer to protect his dignity and his freedom behind a pseudonym have generated a significant layer of metafiction which this essay proposes to examine. An analysis of Smaïl's different types of narrative accounts will help us elucidate the cultural and literary effects produced by the writer's strategy.

While it had somewhat disappeared as a central preoccupation in recent African fiction, the issue of "race" comes up in a striking way in Daniel Biyaoula's first novel, L 'impasse. Published in 1996, L'impasse sets out to expose through the eye of a rather cynical first-person narrator the neurotic nature of postcolonial subjects' relation to his/her racialized origin. Focusing on the body as a site of authenticity or alienation, the novel can be read as a contemporary and creative version of the "Black experience" as Franz Fanon theorized it almost half a century before in Black Skin White Masks. Psychological detachment is often presented as an exile from which there is no return. The works of Malika Mokeddem illustrate the lack of social support for psychic space of the individual who passes through anxiety and ends in psychological detachment. This article proposes to show, in L 'interdite and N'zid, how Mokeddem affirms nevertheless hope for recovery from this state. It also demonstrates the link between hope and mobility of the body, as well as of words, which must cross the spaces of anxiety in order to find community and the "inestimable freedom" (L'interdite, p. 132) that support and permit …

DePaul's School of Education was the first implementation of a Needs Assessment designed jointly by the university's Instructional Technology Development (ITD) area and the University Libraries. The goals for the Needs Assessment were to identify areas in which an expanded, unified and comprehensive faculty development training and support package would both address faculty's perceived needs while also improving adoption of existing instructional technologies and/or services. The Library's education bibliographer and the ITD consultant for education interviewed faculty representing a cross section of departments and programs as well as technological expertise. Wholeness as indivisible and the human being's connectedness with it are the abiding themes

of the Buddhist experience-rooted and process-oriented thinking that goes by the name of

rDzogs-chen. From its basically holistic point of view, the human being is a sub-whole,

similar to a variation on a musical theme. From another point of view, however, based on

the confusion of a compacted (and hence de-compactable) totality with wholeness, the human

Zen is not merely an exotic practice imported from the Orient; it is the constantly fresh

realization ofTrue Nature everywhere and at every time. So, it may be expected that sparks

of Zen will be found in all cultures. Hence, having been engaged with Zen practice since 1964,

the author reminisces here about how he turned to Zen after his study of Gestalt psychology

The content of this paper is primarily the product of an attempt to understand consciousness by working through the Gestell - conventionalised epistemology, at least some of several foundational concepts. The piece “Seven infinitely short periods of (Winter) time” was composed in 2002 during my first Winter in the United States. It was my first Winter with snow (lots of snow, by the way; I was living in New Hampshire). The experience of below-freezing temperatures was something completely unfamiliar to me, accustomed as I was to the other side of the thermometer, the “above-melting” temperatures from Brazil.
