Synopsis: In a continuation of the stories of Jason and the Argonauts, foreign princess and sorceress Medea has murdered her own father to help Jason win the Golden Fleece and the kingdom of Thessaly. They have married and have two sons. Now in ancient Corinth, Medea is told that Jason will be marrying the Corinthian princess. The King of Corinth, anticipating her wrath, sends her into exile. She plans revenge against Jason and negotiates safe haven with the naïve King of Athens. …

The Germanic words for home may have been derived from two Indo-European words: kei, which means lying or settling down, a bed or couch, as well as something beloved, and ksêmas, which means safe dwelling. These linguistic ancestors also yield the Greek koiman, to put to sleep, which is the root of koimeterion, a sleeping place or cemetery. In time, the word for home in several European languages (ham in Anglo-Saxon; heimr in Old Norse; háims in Gothic; kemas or kaímas in Lithuanian; caymis in Old Prussian, etc.) also came to mean a village, town, or collection of dwellings. Swearer includes in his discussion of Buddhist ecology not only particular texts, philosophical ideas, and practices that Buddhists marshal in defense of an environmental ethic, but also hermeneutical and tactical strategies that Buddhists employ as well. He wants to ensure that the religious dimensions of global environmental issues really do have an impact on decision-making.

In this essay we first offer some general comments about Cornelis Graafland's work, leading up to and including his gloss on the covenant/predestinarian thought of key representatives of the Puritan tradition. Then comes a brief exposition of the views of John Calvin and William Ames on the relationship of these two heads of doctrine, followed by a more detailed examination of the unique theology of Johannes Cocceius. We assess the earlier (1957) groundbreaking work of Charles S. McCoy and the more contemporary (1988, 1997) scholarly investigation of Willem Jan van Asselt in order to determine whether these scholars perceive the …

After numerous visits to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, I have found that the best place to start a tour is with the two films on the ground floor. Both films serve to set up narratives that run throughout the rest of the exhibits. The first film, Mystery Train, tells a traditional history of rock music's development beginning with the merging of blues, gospel and country music in large, urban centers like Chicago and encourages visitors to think of rock in terms of its continuing development through self-referencing. In an early scene in The Terminator, the Cyborgian Arnold Schwarzenegger walks into an L.A. gun shop and asks to see the wares. The shopkeeper lays out Uzis, submachine guns, rocket launchers, and other sophisticated means of overkill, nervously understating, "Any one of these will suit you for home defense purposes." The situation is likewise in the growing child protection industry. In keeping with the shopkeeper's sly comment, these businesses feast on an all-pervasive culture of fear, while creating a mockery, alibi, and distraction out of what they are really about - to remake the home as a citadel through …

I turn to Judith Butler to clarify my term corporate globalization trouble as well as to explain why this trouble should be situated in gendered terms regarding power, visibility, and subjectivity inequities. [1] Butler describes deviant gender identities failing to coincide with the matrix of intelligibility: precisely because certain kinds of 'gender identities' fail to conform to those norms of cultural intelligibility, they appear only as developmental failures or logical impossibilities from within that domain. Hip-Hop/Scotch: "Sounding Francophone" In French And United States Cultures, Francesca Sautman

This essay adresses the relationship between "being/speaking Francophone" and forms of ethnic-cultural dissent in France and the U.S. In both countries, terms such as Francophone and Francophonie are often captured by specific political agendas and practicies. What it means to be "Francophone" involves complex interfacings between various langages, including English and French, between competing discursive claims made on the basis of linguistic home and the particular forms of cultural and linguistic hybridity, such as French hip-hop culture and world music.
