Visionaire
1 volume (unpaged) : chiefly color illustrations ; 31 cm, Limited edition of 6000 numbered copies. Having done an issue on woman, we decided the time had come to do one on man. Mario Testino, in his second run as guest editor, conceptualized the ultimate men's magazine complete with past icons and new heroes, advertisements from the 1970s, photographs made by famous women of their men, and man as seen by contemporary artists. Neville Wakefield edited an all-vellum section of video stills, Will McBride contributed a section called Manliness, and Mario Testino did Man at Work. More than one hundred …

African-American Life Writing: Harriet Jacobs And Bell Hooks, Luo Yi
African-American Life Writing: Harriet Jacobs And Bell Hooks, Luo Yi
Masters Theses
Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and bell hooks' Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood share a common concern with emancipation and employ complementary rhetorical strategies. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl presents Harriet Jacobs' journey of personal self-discovery through various relationships with others, and her personal narrative finally serves the larger goal of emancipation for her people. Jacobs' narrative is full of other voices, or personae. Even the narrator, Linda Brent, is pseudonymous, or "other," in this sense. Jacobs invokes these personae in her autobiography; she explores her experiences as a web of …

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Hindu Perspective, K. L. Seshagiri Rao
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
I wish to express my deep appreciation and thanks to Professor Harold Coward for inviting me to contribute an article on Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Hindu Perspective for his Bulletin. This theme has engaged my interest for the last three decades, and I am glad at the opportunity to express my thoughts on this very relevant and significant subject at the dawn of the 21st century.

Heirarchies In The Nature Of God? Questioning The "Saguna-Nirguna" Distinction In Advaita Vedanta, Anantanand Rambachan
Heirarchies In The Nature Of God? Questioning The "Saguna-Nirguna" Distinction In Advaita Vedanta, Anantanand Rambachan
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
The Advaita tradition has not merely been the focus of my scholarly work; my personal world-view has been shaped by its insights and I continue to be deeply influenced by its understanding of human existence. One cannot, however, ignore the challenges of claims which are different from one's own and my encounter with other Hindu traditions and other religions has led to a re-evaluation of many aspects of my Advaita heritage. I have chosen, in what follows, to reflect on how my original understanding is being transformed by encounters with other traditions by focusing on the Advaita representation of brahman …
Retrospective: The Birthing Of A Discipline, William Cenkner
Retrospective: The Birthing Of A Discipline, William Cenkner
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
It is not clear whether Hindu-Christian study is a new enterprise or something that has been in progress for some years. My four decade experience has confronted a set of problems clouding any self-identity. First is the problem of naming. My own preference has always been the written text and my training, likewise, has been textual. In fact every course in graduate school was the study of a particular Indian text, whether Hindu or Buddhist. That's what Indology was about in those years. We were wary of comparative religions done in Europe and further saw religionswisenchaft as generalist and even …
Hindu Bioethics For The Twenty-First Century, S. Cromwell Crawford
Hindu Bioethics For The Twenty-First Century, S. Cromwell Crawford
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
In his Cross Cultural Perspectives in Medical Ethics: Readings, Robert Veatch observes, "The religions of Judaism and Christianity and the secular thought of the political philosophy of liberalism in the Anglo-American West are not the only alternatives to a Hippocratic medical ethic." In fact, the new pluralistic approach to world cultures is introducing us to several religious and philosophical alternatives from outside the Anglo-American West. Just as alternative medicine is becoming recognized and respected, and is being incorporated into mainstream medicine, there is a growing admission that the ethical problems we face today have dimensions that are not adequately …

Viewpoint: Dialogue: A Call To Friendship, Kenneth Cracknell
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
In the past twelve months we have lost three great figures from the active list of participants in Hindu-Christian dialogue: Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1926-2000), Ninian Smart (1927-2001), and Eric J. Sharpe (1933-2000). It is my keen sense of an ending of an era that leads to the reflections in this Viewpoint.
