By the time Maria de Zayas published her Desengaños amorosos, the honor scenario, due in large part to the dominance of the comedia and especially of Calderón, had taken on a number of characteristics that today seem inseparable from the familiar plotlines. This essay is a response to Seigfried's invitation to explore historical writings of women within the pragmatist tradition. In the first part, I show how Dewey's and Addams's shared appreciation of evolutionary perspectives, concrete experience, context, and sympathetic understanding led them to similar conceptions of social democracy and similar critiques of industrial capitalism. In Part II, I explain how Addams's critique of industrial capitalism goes beyond Dewey's in explicitly linking capitalism With philanthropy as then practiced, and criticizing both as patriarchal. In Part III, I compare Addams's account to that of socialist feminists, and show that while there are clear …

Problem. Clergy sexual misconduct is a significant problem for the church. There are legal and financial problems, as well as damage to individuals and communities. The purpose of this study was to examine personality profiles and situational themes of ministers in treatment whose presenting problems included sexual misconduct.

Method. Inactive case files of ministers in treatment were analyzed. From the case file it was determined if the minister was involved in an intimate affair which included an emotional bond, a casual affair with no emotional bond, or was not involved in an affair. This article discuss the supposed passivity of the sick as it was assumed by some of the renovated historic and socio-cultural narratives of disease, health, medicine and social control. It reconstructs individual and collective conflicts between 1910 and 1940—from written petitions to strikes—were tuberculosis patients were protagonists. It underlines that in dealing with the medical power and knowledge, and in a subordinated position, tuberculosis patients were able to negotiate, confront and display subtle battles. However, this re-incorporation of the sick into the historical narrative as active protagonists has to be done very cautiously. Nothing indicates that during the first half …

From the first image that greeted readers of his book, Olaudah Equiano presented the self of his 1789 autobiographical narrative as a pious Christian, one whose religious conversion meant a kind of freedom as significant as his manumission from slavery. In the striking frontispiece portrait Equiano sits with biblical text in hand, insisting-in his visual as in his textual presentations of himself-that the Christianity he embraces is the defining feature of his life-story. He responds, as Susan Marren has suggested, to two paradoxical imperatives: one, to write himself into creation as a speaking subject and, two, to write an antislavery …

สถานภาพ "ญี่ปุ่นศึกษา" ในประเทศไทย พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๐-๒๕๓๕ (ค.ศ. ๑๙๕๗-๑๙๙๒) บทความนี้มีจุดประสงค์ที่จะศึกษา "ญี่ปุ่นศึกษา" ในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ ค.ศ. ๑๙๕๗-๑๙๙๒ ซึ่งเป็นระยะที่การสอนและสิ่งพิมพ์ เช่น หนังสือ งานวิจัย และบทความเกี่ยวกับญี่ปุ่น มีความ แพร่หลายอย่างมาก มหาวิทยาลัยหลายแห่งในกรุงเทพฯ และต่างจังหวัดได้เปิดสอนภาษาและ วิชาต่าง ๆ ที่เกี่ยวกับญี่ปุ่น สาเหตุของความนิยมดังกล่าวคือ ประการแรก จำนวนนักวิชาการ เกี่ยวกับญี่ปุ่นซึ่งได้รับการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศทางตะวันตก และมหาวิทยาลัยในประเทศญี่ปุ่นมีจำนวนเพิ่มมากขึ้น นักวิชาการเหล่านี้ส่วนใหญ่กลับมาทำงานในมหาวิทยาลัย เช่น จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ เป็นต้น ประการที่สอง หน่วยงาน ญี่ปุ่นในประเทศไทย เช่น มูลนิธิญี่ปุ่นให้ความสนับสนุนงานวิจัย และการพิมพ์เรื่องเกี่ยวกับ ญี่ปุ่น ประการที่สาม สำนักพิมพ์ไทยสนใจพิมพ์หนังสือเกี่ยวกับญี่ปุ่น ทั้งนี้เพราะอยู่ในความ นิยม คนไทยสนใจเหตุผลของการประสบความสําเร็จทางเศรษฐกิจของญี่ปุ่น ดังจะพบว่า หนังสือ หลายเล่มให้ความสนใจในประเด็นนี้ ในท้ายบทความได้เสนอแนวโน้ม ปัญหา และแนวทาง แก้ไข "ญี่ปุ่นศึกษา" ในประเทศไทย พร้อมทั้งกล่าวถึง "ญี่ปุ่นศึกษา" ในประเทศแถบเอเชีย
