Restoring The Juridical Image: Apologia For Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Joseph R. Blaney

Image restoration theory is used to discover that Holy Cross Father James Tunstead Burthchaell's defense of the Papal Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae was ineffective. Although he used attacks on accusers appropriately, his strategies of denial and transcendence were in conflict. He also failed to adequately address the accusation that the nature of American college charters make the American bishops' application of the document impossible. Finally, though perhaps through no fault of his own, he was "preaching to the choir. " The study sheds further light on the role of transcendence in religious image repair.

The qualitative study of psychological and social factors plays a significant role in determining adequacy of assistance, given the interpersonal dynamics of the relationship between care recipient and personal assistant. Assistance rendered out of love and familial duty carries with it different motivational and behavioral factors than assistance rendered for money. Nevertheless, paid personal assistance remains the only viable option for many people with chronic illness and disability who continue to live independently in the community. The mass media identify raves as the exclusive setting for consuming ecstasy. Ecstasy is a variety of compounds mimicking the effects of MDMA. Since ecstasy is an illegal drug often consumed at raves, moral entrepreneurs have defined raves as a threat to children and public safety. Moral entrepreneurs have mobilized to prohibit raves using legislation. I hypothesize that claims-makers have constructed in textual mass media the moral panic about raves, which resulted in legislation that was approved by moral entrepreneurs to control raves. I employed two separate studies using quantitative and qualitative methodologies to test the moral panic theory. In …

Faculty Work

This article describes the practice of Abbott H. Thayer (1849-1921) of working on several copies of the same painting, taking each to a different conclusion. It compares that method to the current computer-based practice of using the SAVE AS command to create copies of a digital artwork or design, which can then also be taken to different conclusions.

Critical Thinking And Culture, Yoshimi Matsuda

The major purpose of this paper is to first argue that our thinking in general is adapted to cultural and socio-political environment. The argument will be helped by the connectionist approach that emphasizes learning and therefore nature and nurture interaction. Second, it argues that since most of our thinking or reasoning is cultural product, our evaluation of modes of thinking, too, is influenced by our familiar ways of thinking/reasoning. Third, it delineates fallibility of our cognitive processes themselves and describes some of known cognitive errors in reasoning. Finally, it discusses ways in which critical thinking may be enhanced.

What Is The Meaning Of Critical Thinking In The Context Of Globalization?, Stephen Evans

A review of recent literature advocating critical thinking as a necessary response to 'globalization' gives no clear picture of what critical thinking is. Drawing on Kant and Hermeneutics, this paper proposes a critical definition of critical thinking as an understanding of its subject matter which questions itself, and a characterization of critical thinking as the tension of standing within the subject matter while holding it at a distance. Considered against a backdrop of concerns about 'globalization', critical thinking is seen, not only as an intellectual method, but also as an existential engagement of the world.

The present paper briefly presents the life and works of Preecha Intarapalit with special reference to his immortal Pol Nikorn Kimnguan (PNK) comedy. Being acclaimed "the People's writer", P.Intarapalit's remarkable accomplishments as an author were not only for his voluminous work, but also for getting people into the habit of reading. However, the most valuable contribution of PNK series was the recording of Thailand's social evolution over three decades in the form of an "oral history".

Rak Thi Tong Montra [Magic Love] is written in the form of novel by Thommayanti. The story line of this novel is still the same as that of Lilit Phra Lo, a well-known traditional Thai literature in the Early Ayutthaya Period. Though the plot is kept, many changes are made to suggest the writer's new themes and purpose. Thommayanti tells the story by using the younger princess to narrate the story in the form of a memoir. Soma: Not So Devine, Jean Mulholland

An examination of the method of preparation and the properties of the drug, Soma, used in the sacrificial rituals of the Vedic religion since before 1500 BC, proves that R. Gordon Wasson was wrong. Soma was not a 'divine' mushroom. Soma is more likely to have been a plant part, such as seeds, roots, leaves or a substance, such as an oleo-resin, prepared from the sap of a plant, small or large. This paper incorporates some of the pertinent points made on this subject by the author in a previous publication (Mulholland, 1980).

The Double: Tracing The Cracks Of Dual Identity In Balinese And European Ritualized Performance, Catherine Diamond

The Balinese dance legong is compared with two European plays, Jean Genet's The Maids and Tom Stoppard's Resencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead in order to examine different approaches to the function and characterization of the Double. All three contain ritual performance in which the pairs exchange their roles, but for different purposes and with different level of fluidity. All three play with alternating in presentation between exact mirror images and distinguishable individual characteristics.
