The primary aims of this study are to identify the common prepositional errors in the written texts of Form 4 Malay ESL students who have studied English in school for ten years, to measure the relative intensities of these errors and to find out the causes for the occurrence of these errors. Nine concepts of prepositions which pose the most difficulty for students are examined. This study analyses the Baba translated works between 1889-1950, focusing on 68 unique titles identified from six libraries: University of Malaya Library, and the libraries at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, University Science of Malaysia, National Library of Singapore, National University of Singapore and the British Library. The Baba translated works indicated three periods of publication productivity between 1889-1909 (the embryonic period), which produced 18 publications, between 1910- 1929 (the stagnant period) with IO titles and between 1930-1939 (the revival period) with 39 titles. It focuses on cohesion in written discourse and more specifically, on conjunctions in authentic texts. It starts off by discussing the descendance of the Holy al-Qur'an, the wisdom (hikmah), how it was compiled and spreading/expanse in Nusantara including in Malaysia and specifically in Kelantan. This study attempts to trace the composing processes of pre-intermediate ESL students in their first language and the English language. It is also to test the hypothesis that pre-­intermediate ESL students use L1 as the dominant language to think when writing in their first language and the English Language. This is a qualitative research project using a case-study approach obtaining data through multiple data collection method.
