L'Image-Son Dans La Zerda Ou La Pharmacie Du Cinématographe, Mireille Calle-Gruber

Film and literature are interrelated in the works of Assia Djebar. An analysis of La Zerda et les chants de l'oubli reveals among other techniques, that the "image- son" can also be found in the literary production of this author whose concern for autobiography and languages is essential.

The study examines how Ousmane Sembene positions himself as a fiimmakerthrough his ideology. it begins with a summary of his trade union days on the docks of Marseille, and continues with his memberships in the CGT (Confederation generale des travailleurs), the French Communist Party, and other sister organisations. Further, the study provides a sketch of Sembene's ideal society and finally analyze the role he attributes to cinema in such a setting. The study concludes with a discovery ofthe main features of politically committed filmmaking for Ousmane Sembene.

Silent Derogation And Perceptions Of Deceptiveness: Does Communicating Nonverbal Disbelief During An Opponent's Speech Affect Perceptions Of Debaters' Veracity?, John S. Seiter

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Compared to televised debates using a single‐screen presentation, those using a split screen presenting both debaters simultaneously show viewers the nonverbal reactions of a debater's opponent. This study examined the effect of such reactions on viewers’ ratings of both the speaker's and the nonverbal communicator's veracity. Students watched one of four versions of a televised debate. One version used a single‐screen presentation, showing only the speaker, while the other three versions used a split‐screen presentation in which the speaker's opponent displayed constant, occasional, or no nonverbal disbelief regarding the content of the speaker's message. The Brownies'Book (January 1920-December 1921) was a groundbreaking but short-lived monthly children's magazine created in part to provide African American children like Annabelle with "colored" fairies. It was the brainchild of W. E. B. DuBois, the only African American founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and since 1910 the managing editor of the NAACP's official organ, Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races. The Brownies' Book grew out of the popular annual "Children's Number" of Crisis, published each October starting in 1912. In this special issue, dozens of photographs of African American children submitted …
