This collection of essays has many very fine pieces, but there is really no coherent theme that ties them together. While i; is about women in the Renaissancea nd early modern Europe (Meek covers her bases by using both terms), the essays are very specialized. They do not provide the wide coverage of material that the title implies and the title would never suggest the specifics in the book. Die Neutralitätspolitik der Schweiz wurde bis in das Frühjahr 1944 grossteils eingehalten. Dann veränderten sich die politischen Rahmenbedingungen dermassen, dass Schweizer Geheimdienste bereit waren, österreichische Widerstandsgruppen zu unterstützen. Der Zusammenbruch des Dritten Reiches schien nur mehr eine Frage der Zeit zu sein. Allerdings fürchtete man das Eindringen deutscher Truppen im Falle eines chaotischen Kriegsendes. Darüber hinaus waren die Schweizer Militärs vom Konzept einer deutschen «Alpenfestung» an ihrer Ostgrenze lange Zeit überzeugt. Im September 1943 besetzten deutsche Truppen Italien. Von vielen als Befreiung begrüßt, wutde Südtirol "de facto" an das Dritte Reich angeschlossen. Dahinter standen Annexionstendenzen vor allem Tiroler Nationalsozialisten. Der deutschsprachige Widerstand setzte auf den Sieg der Alliierten und eine Angliederung an ein demokratisches Österreich. Dies wiederum rief Reaktionen italienischerseits hervor, wobei die Akteure der "Resistenza" und die Mussolini-Getreuen das gleiche nationale Ziel verfolgten: die Erhaltung der Brennergrenze. Alle Akteure wußten, daß die territoriale Zukunft dieses Gebietes von der Haltung der Alliierten, insbesondere den USA abhing. Over the past two years since the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie Wyoming, the circumstances of his death have held a symbolic place in the story of violence against gay men and lesbians nationally. University of Wyoming Professor Beth Loffreda's book Losing Matt Shepard: Life and Politics in the Aftermath of Anti-Gay Murder is on the "Lambda Book Report" best-sellers list and MTV has recently premiered "Anatomy of a Hate Crime: The Matthew Shepard Story" that dramatized the events of October 6th, 1998. When I receive copies of my college transcripts from CUNY these days, under my major it reads, "Gay and Lesbian Studies," followed by "Gender and Sexuality Studies." As far as I know, I am the first CUNY undergraduate to see such a major on his/her transcript. I have managed to build this major through the CUNY BA program — which allows students to fashion their own major if no campus provides it, by compiling courses at a range of CUNY campuses — and CLAGS has been instrumental in my achieving this goal. Canonizing The Wieszcz: The Subjective Turn In Polish Literary Biography In The 1860s, Andrea Lanoux

Part of a forum on the work of Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. The writer examines the radical change in the presentation of poets' biographies in Polish textbooks of literature during the 1860s. She contends that this change coincided with the stabilization of a Polish romantic literary canon and involved, among other things, the subject's personal life, contributions to the national cause, and subjective experiences and feelings. This subjective turn in literary biography demonstrates the relationship between canon building and nation building, she argues, in the respect that it served to unite millions of people living under different political systems. Jewish Philosophies After Heidegger: Imagining A Dialogue Between Jonas And Levinas, Lawrence A. Vogel

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Emmanuel Levinas and Hans Jonas draw on their roots in phenomenology and Judaism to answer the ethical nihilism of Heidegger's thought. Though both Levinas and Jonas aim to ground an imperative of responsibility in a Good-in-itself ultimately sourced in God, their disagreements are basic and revolve around three fundamental questions: (1) Can Jews "after Auschwitz" have a theology without lapsing into theodicy?; (2) Is the Good-in-itself within Being or "otherwise than Being"?; and (3) Is ethics the completion of nature or against nature? I explore possibilities for integrating the apparently incompatible ideas of Levinas and Jonas.

Reliability On The Crowded Net: Finding The Truth In A Web Of Deceit, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

On-line, just as off-line, there are ways of assessing the credibility of information sources. The Internet, although it arguably makes for nothing wholly new in this regard, complicates the ordinary task of assessing credibility. In the first section, I consider a specific example and argue that Internet contentproviders have no clear interest in resolving these comlications. In the second, I consider four general ways that we might assess credibility and explore how they apply to life online. Finally, I argue that even careful information gathering may pose subtle pitfalls but that some of these may be mitigated on-line.

The library website is a significant access point to a library’s collections, resources, and services. A website can and should provide information about the library in a way that can be efficiently navigated and used by all library patrons. The usability of a library website can be improved through changes in organization and design informed by the experiences of real users. User expectations should be primary in determining the content, purpose, organization, and design of the site.
