The Europeans were the first ones to establish Consuls at Jerusalem. They used their consular offices to establish permanence and extend their influence in the region. Under the guise of citizen and religious protection they extended their power and influence in the Ottoman territory. The United States established its consulate in Jerusalem in 1853. In comparison with the European consuls the American Service was-new, inexperienced, and lacking professionalism. This American outpost was plagued with complexities that were distinct to the office at Jerusalem. The consul reports from 1856-1896 reflect the mission and difficulties faced at this seemingly remote outpost.

Schulz-Grobert argues that scholars' pursuit of a phantom Low German original, and their "fixation" on Herman Bote as its author, have directed scholarly attention away from the role the editors in Strassburg played in its production. While TE scholarship to date is in agreement that a Strassburg editor had a hand in the final version of the book, Schulz-Grobert argues that the circle of humanists and literati associated with Grüninger's press in Strassburg were alone responsible for producing the book.There is no need to assume the existence of a Low German original, he states, nor does the "ERMAN B" acrostic, …

Whenever I went off to see the Solar Bears of the International Hockey League in the O-rena, I liked to think of it as "Hockey Night in Orlando." With much fanfare and enthusiasm the Orlando Solar Bears opened play in the IHL six seasons ago. Two weeks ago they won the Turner Cup signifying the championship of the IHL. A few days later the IHL was out of business, and then two days ago the Solar Bears announced their exit from the scene.

Toward A Discourse Of Mestizaje: The Role Of The Patagonian Frontier In The Construction Of Argentine National Identity, Daniela V. L. Senderowicz

This essay will explore the notion of mestizaje in the Republic of Argentina. Specifically, it will use the Argentine Patagonia as a point of departure for this analysis, an area in which conquest resulted in a community of mixed-race and mixed culture individuals. The juxtaposition of the struggle between white settlers and Mapuche-Tehuelche Indians of the region demonstrates a continuity in discrimination in the nation's history. For this very reason, the area represents a general pattern present throughout the country, and, hence, I use it as a prototype to draw conclusions about race relations in the nation as a whole. …
