Hanover Courthouse: The Union's Tactical Victory And Strategic Failure, Jerry Joseph Coggeshall Jan 1999

Hanover Courthouse: The Union's Tactical Victory And Strategic Failure, Jerry Joseph Coggeshall

History Theses & Dissertations

The Battle of Hanover Courthouse was the high water mark of the Union's Peninsular Campaign: the battle was a decisive Federal victory, but disjointed leadership by the Union high command squandered the ensuing strategic opportunities. This research project will evaluate the complex strategic situation which developed in the area of Hanover Courthouse as the Union high command attempted to reinforce the Army of the Potomac in its drive on Richmond in May of 1862.

The goal of this study will be to expose the strategic opportunities which were lost to the Union at Hanover Courthouse as a result of disjointed …

A Voice Restored: Louise Labé'S Impersonation Of Sappho, Phyllis Brown Jan 1999

A Voice Restored: Louise Labé'S Impersonation Of Sappho, Phyllis Brown

English

Ever since the publication of her Œuvres in 1555, Louise Labé's name and poetic voice have been closely linked with the name, voice, and identity of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Labé's contemporaries called her the "Sappho Lyonnaise," and Labé names and alludes to Sappho at several points in her writings. For example, in Labé's first elegy the persona specifies that Apollo has given her the lyre which was accustomed to sing about lesbian love and which would at the same time cry about hers.

From Turnpikes To Railroads: Antebellum Transportation Improvements And Community Development In Taylor County, Virginia, Scott W. Daley Jan 1999

From Turnpikes To Railroads: Antebellum Transportation Improvements And Community Development In Taylor County, Virginia, Scott W. Daley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the 1820s, a revolution in transportation technology changed forever the shipment of goods, travel, and the process of communication as overland transportation shifted from turnpikes to railroads. This study examines the affect on community formation and development in two turnpike villages and one town along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, America’s first inter-regional commercial railroad line. Between the mid-1830s and 1860, as railroads replaced turnpikes, the villages of Fetterman and Pruntytown, Virginia, came into existence, flourished, and began to decline as railroads passed along the lower Tygart River in 1850, directly competing with turnpikes. The town of Grafton in …

A Psychosocial Support System For Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors In West Indonesia, Edison Pandjaitan Jan 1999

A Psychosocial Support System For Seventh-Day Adventist Pastors In West Indonesia, Edison Pandjaitan

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem The adjustment that many SDA Indonesian pastors go through in the early years of their ministry and the feeling on the part of some ministers that they lack essential psychosocial support suggest the importance of designing a systematic support system. Therefore the dissertation addresses the following questions: (1) How do SDA pastors in the West Indonesia Union indicate their need of a support system? (2) What resources are available to meet the needs of Indonesian pastors? (3) What can the minister, the local church, and the hiring organization do to strengthen this support system?

Method The project is descriptive-prescriptive. …

Review Of La Imagen De Nuestros Músicos: Del Siglo De Oro A Edad De Plata, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

La imagen de nuestros músicos: Del Siglo de Oro a la Edad de Plata is a hefty compilation of 681 portraits of Spanish composers from the Renaissance to the present. The illustrations are organized in four large chapters: "Del siglo de oro a la ilustración", covers the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries; "El primer romanticismo" and "El segundo romanticismo", deal with the first and second half of the 19th century; the final section, "Los músicos de nuestro siglo" focuses on the 20th century. If my numbers are correct, the earliest composer included in the study is the polyphonist Cristóbal de …

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Jan 1999

A Woman's Field Is Made At Night: Gendered Land Rights And Norms In Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

Gendered social norms and institutions are important determinants of agricultural activities in southwestern Burkina Faso. This paper argues that gendered land tenure, in particular, has effects on equity and efficiency. The usual view of women as holders of secondary, or indirect, rights to land must be supplemented by a more nuanced understanding of tenure. Women's rights are in fact considerably more complex than the simple right to fields from their husbands. First, women's rights to property obtained from men may be coupled with other rights and obligations. In many ethnic groups, women have share rights to the harvest of their …

Review Of Moses: A Life By Jonathan Kirsch, Sidnie White Crawford Jan 1999

Review Of Moses: A Life By Jonathan Kirsch, Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

Meek and arrogant, mild and unrelentingly harsh, merciful and cruel—Moses is one of the most difficult characters in the Bible. But Jonathan Kirsch, in this readable and well-researched account of Moses the lawgiver, does not shy away from those contradictions; instead, he emphasizes them. In so doing, Kirsch, a book columnist for the Los Angeles Times and also a lawyer, has made accessible one of the great figures of the Bible.

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim Jan 1999

Manuscripts And Markets: The Case And Cause Of Authors In Search Of Publishers, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

In November 1996, the New Yorh Times ran a front page article dealing with the crisis in publishing monographs in the humanities. The piece opened with the experience of a young scholar in Oregon who had sent a book manuscript on Theodor Adorno to a major university press who refused to read it for reasons of "marketability" (Al). As the report continued, it outlined the economic and editorial reasons why many researchers in the humanities, especially at the beginning of their careers, encountered significant difficulty landing contracts at presses that would have published their work in the past. At the …

Increasing Access To The University Of California: A Case Study Of Senate Constitutional Amendment 7, Jamillah Moore

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this case study was to examine alternatives to the admissions process for students seeking enrollment in the University of California. As the University of California was the first public university in the nation to eliminate the consideration of race within their admissions process under SP-1, this study focused on undergraduate admissions solely within this institution. In addition, SP-1 did not ban affirmative action therefore this study did not focus on it. It should be noted that the University of California Board of Regents established SP-1 based upon Governor Wilson's executive order which called for the end of …

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell Jan 1999

Imagining Machines: Time & Image In The Shorter Poems Of William Carlos Williams, Stuart Campbell

Theses : Honours

A discussion of time and image in the shorter poems of William Carlos Williams. The particular focus is Williams' short poems published between the Great War and World War II. The relationship between the form of the poems, and Williams' theories on poetry, as expressed in Spring and All, and The Wedge is examined. In turn, Williams' theories are viewed in the context of Imagism, Objectivist poetics, and the modernist machine aesthetic. Williams' application of these theories is seen to create a poetic form that generates images in the reader's imagination in synchrony with the moment.

Professor of English at Texas Christian University, editor of a book of critical essays on John Dryden's satire, Mac Flecknoe, and author of articles which have appeared in a number of journals, he has twice received teaching awards during his thirty years at TCU, including most recently the Piper Professor Award in 1994 given to just ten Texas educators annually honoring significant contributions in teaching.

Y51k And Still Counting: Some Hindu Views Of Time, Vasudha Narayanan Jan 1999

Y51k And Still Counting: Some Hindu Views Of Time, Vasudha Narayanan

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

At the beginning of every religious ritual conducted in Hindu brahmanical modes, the officiating priest and those doing the ritual formally declare the co-ordinates of the land and the time in which the rite takes place. These words are part of the sankalpa or the declaration of intention to do the ritual. Such co-ordinates are in cosmic frameworks; the land is identified with one of the dvipas or islands in puranic cosmology and the timespan is given as a moment that occurs in a span of millions of years. The celebrant first announces the name of the kalpa (a span …

Humanism And The Ignatian Spirit, Sam Atkins Jan 1999

Humanism And The Ignatian Spirit, Sam Atkins

Honors Theses

Humanism has often been associated with secular advancements and the opposite of religious dogma. However, the development of humanism in the sixteenth-century coincided with the rise of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits. Therefore, it is not surprising to find that Ignatius shared many of the same goals as the humanists. Erasmus was the most famous humanists of the Renaissance. One of his principle objectives was to bring forth a revival of classical studies and an appreciation for their scholarship, rhetoric, and civic virtue. Analysis of Ignatius and the Jesuits reveals that they were influenced by the humanists and …
