In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses. Book Review: Dorlikon An Der Grenze Des Wachstums. Zur Kulturgeschichte Einer Zürcher Dorfschaft Im 17. Jahrhundert., Leo Schelbert

This impressive study has three main sections. The author offers, first, what he titles as Erzählung, that is narrative or story. In five chapters he gives a wealth of detail about the lives of the Dorlikon families, their struggle to meet the challenges of a sometimes harsh climate, their sparse resources due to bad harvests, the resulting loss of rented farms, and the cycles of birth, procreation, and death. Their valorous strivings as well as occasional misdeeds are reconstructed with meticulous concern for exact documentation. Key documents are cited in their original seventeenth century German.
