It is a tremendous honour to be talking to you today. When I first started work on my biography of George Eliot back in 1993 I never imagined that I would one day be celebrating her birthday with the people to whom her life and work mean so much, the members of the George Eliot Fellowship.

In recent days and weeks there has been considerable discussion in the national press of Bill Bradley's presidential run and its relationship to his professional basketball career. Such questions as: Should he exploit his NBA fame for political purposes? Should he be using this fame to raise money as he did in the big fund-raiser in Madison Square Garden last week? Why after years of disconnecting himself from his basketball career does he now seek to reconnect? Does this negate his claims that he much more than a basketball player?

During the World War II bombings of London, four English siblings are sent to a country house where they will be safe. Lucy, one of the children, finds a wardrobe that transports her to a magical world called Narnia. After coming back, she soon returns to Narnia with her brothers, Peter and Edmund, and her sister, Susan. There they join the magical lion, Aslan, in the fight against the evil White Witch.
