This is a preliminary exploration of the concept of sustainability and its potential usefulness to anthropologists. “Sustainable” is distinguished from “stable” and “viable” in terms of its implications of directionality of time, pointing both backward and forward. Given the time implications, the contexts of “sustainable Xs” (technology, activity, development, etc.) are crucial to explaining what happened to X in the past and prognosticating its future. The argument is illustrated by analyzing data on obsolete fishing practices on Kapingamarangi Atoll (Federated States of Micronesia), focusing on the contexts of change in political /religious organization in the twentieth century. Development, Sustainability, And The Deforestation Of Samoa, Paul Shankman

Pacific Studies

The forests of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa) are rapidly disappearing. This article reviews the history of Samoan deforestation, particularly during the last four decades, in the context of ideas about development and sustainability. It also examines the role of village agriculturalists in the process of deforestation. Recent economic, technological, and organizational changes have increased village agricultural expansion and, consequently, deforestation.

Discusses how defining key terms in context helps students understand and retain concepts. Considers how implementing small-group discussion dramatically changed the classroom dynamics and involved more students in the discovery process. Finds that in small peer groups, students are more inclined to ask questions and help each other clarify their thinking.

As Different As Night And Day: Palamon And Arcite Reconsidered, William Hamilton

Through an analysis of characterization and the sub-text of infernal allusions to the myths of Orpheus and the ravishment of Proserpina, my thesis demonstrates that the Theban cousins Palamon and Arcite are not only distinct but diametrically opposed characters who are more central to The Knight' s Tale than the present critical consensus allows. Chapter I analyzes Charles Muscarine, who so convincingly put an end to the once lively debate over the characterization of the cousins that the proposition that they are indistinguishable remains an a priori assumption in the criticism of the poem to this day. Masters Theses

Music therapists who work in hospice/palliative care settings are susceptible to burnout as well as others who work in health care settings. In this descriptive correlation study, the components of occupational stress or burnout among music therapists working in hospice/palliative care settings were studied. A mail survey was sent to 300 music therapists who worked in hospice/palliative care settings and were members of the American Music Therapy Association. Of the 181 surveys that were returned, 106 were acceptable for use in this study. Their responses to the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Work Environment Scale, as well as information from the demographic …

And this moment provides a particularly rich occasion for prophets, including those who would forecast the future of language teaching. The conservative temptation is to assume that things will carry on pretty much as they have in the past and that the future will be recognizable from clues in the present. After all, haven't classrooms maintained their familiar organization for 1,000 years? Why should methodology alter radically if the classroom stays the same?

Future Directions For Pronunciation Teaching: Intelligibility, Content, And Oral Communication, John M. Levis

Although pronunciation has become an important component of a communicative approach to language teaching, the development of pronunciation research and teaching is faced with three important, unresolved issues. First, pronunciation theory and practice suffers from a poorly developed understanding of intelligibility, a weakness which stunts significant progress in research and teaching. Second, the widely accepted belief that suprasegmentals such as stress, rhythm and intonation are more important in intelligibility than vowel and consonant sounds is overly simplistic and should be more carefully examined. It has been argued that the present curricula in Communication Skills should undergo vital changes to cater to the training needs of a developing community.
