The Significance Of Shape-Shifting And Transformation In Medieval Welsh And Icelandic Literature: The Ingenuity Of Medieval Writers, Samantha J. Cairo

The folk-motifs of shape-shifting and transformation are an important mechanism in both Medieval Welsh and Icelandic literature. To better understand these motifs it is important to consider the ideas behind and the belief in these concepts. The role of the shaman and the separable soul, the Double, and the psychological projection all form a basis for shape-shifting in Medieval literature.

The Welsh literature will include: Pwyll, Prince qf Dyfed, Manawydan Son of Llyr, Math Son of Mathonwy, Lludd and Llefelys, Culhwch and Olwen, Peredur Son of Efrawg, The Hanes Taliesin,/em>, and the transformational poetry of Taliesin. The Icelandic literature …

On our society, girls and women face unique physical and psychic dangers. There is insufficient support for respectful surfacing and articulation of voice, neither are there sufficient tools with which to combat the socio-environmental phenomena of “hitting the wall” and “going underground.” (Gilligan 1983). While the creative process is full of risk taking and challenge for all, it presents additional problems for girls and women. This thesis identifies and explores the ideas and factors that influence female voicing, with a focus on artistic process as a voicing too. Skin: A Work Of Fiction, Kellie Wells

In Skin, a polyphonous novel, a community of characters similarly metaphysically vexed and similarly grappling with issues of selfhood and identity intersect and catalyze in one another moments of recognition. These brief self-reckonings suggest to the characters that though the quest to discern their place in the universe is a plagued one, it is not without value as it at least results in faint glimmers of enlightenment. Ultimately, how ever, these flickerings of understanding inch the characters no closer to the big certainties they seek, and they therefore must determine that the process itself, or, more to the point, …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the perceptions of successful African American sophomore students and their adjustment to academic success at predominantly White colleges and universities. Twenty African American sophomore females and twenty African American sophomore males from two predominantly White community colleges and two predominantly White universities participated in the study. Each subject completed a demographic survey and participated in an interview. Results indicated that both the attitudes of African American students toward education and their perceptions of the attitudes of those in the educational system towards African American students played an integral role …

The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.

‘Supernatural, Or At Least Romantic': The Ancient Mariner And Parody, Steven Jones

This essay looks through the lens of parody at one of Coleridge's most characteristically "romantic" works, his famous ballad of the supernatural, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Along with the other so-called "Mystery Poems"—"Christabel" and "Kubla Khan"—this is among his most significant generic contributions to the developing idea of Romanticism, the kind of work that comes through a kind of synecdoche to stand for the whole movement as it was conceived.

In this dissertation, I first briefly examine the history of technology as it impacts on literacy practices, and especially the history of resistance to technological developments in the humanities. In so doing, I also briefly examine some of the possible ideological underpinnings of this resistance, including looking at some of the arguments proposed to counter it. More specifically, I consider how literacy practices, pedagogical practices, and assessment and gatekeeping practices in the field of composition studies impact on and are impacted by the intersection of computer technologies and our field. This study is interested in the motivations behind certain authors' attempts to, in the words of Willa Cather, "enter into another person's skin"~in the desires compelling writers to cross, transgress, or perhaps transcend those barriers that have historically divided people in the world: barriers of color, class, and gender. In particular it seeks to examine the works of four early twentieth century writers who undertake what these days is considered risky: transracial and transethnic crossings. Leo Manovich explores the development of the simulation project called, "The Freud-Lissitzky Navigator". Manovich first introduces Sigmund Feud during the year 1928, where Freud met with the Russian designer El Lissitzky to talk about psychoanalysis and modern architecture. During their discussion, they created the Interpretation of Dreams, Freud’s model of the concious/unconciousness. Around this time, Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein wanted to create a film adaptation of Marx’s Capital, which later became his idea of “displacing” Capital in the Interpretation of Dreams. Essentially, Freud and Lissitzky was convinced to commission Eisenstein to creat a walkthrough of the model of a house. …

The article reveals how control can mitigate the boredom in traditional linear media consumed in days' past, how new interactive media can grant children more agency, and in turn make them feel more empowered. It discusses how childrens' media culture, specifically the trope of "instantaneous physical transformation,'' encourages viewers to have fluid identities and asks if this power can provide a platform for social change. With the help of the "The Changelings Project," a research initiative at the Annenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California, Kinder was able to combine these two ideas of agency and fluid …

The novels This Day and Time and The Dollmaker were studied in this thesis. Both novels accurately present some of the effects that early industrialization had on the land and people of Appalachia. The authors of these novels, Anne Armstrong and Harriette Arnow, write about their subjects with honesty and authenticity, and having themselves witnessed many of the events in their novels. These authors are able to write from personal observation and memory as they capture on paper a period of transition in Appalachia and the character of its residents before and after they were influenced. First 20 Precision Among World Wide Web Search Services (Search Engines), H. Vernon Leighton, Jaideep Srivastava

Library Faculty Works

Five search engines, Alta Vista, Excite, Hotbot, Infoseek, and Lycos, are compared for precision on the first twenty results returned for fifteen queries. All searching was done from January 31 to March 12, 1997. Steps have been taken to ensure that bias has not unduly influence the evaluation. Friedmann's randomized block design is used to perform multiple comparisons for significance. Analysis shows that Alta Vista, Excite and Infoseek are the top three services, with their relative rank changing depending on how one interpreted the concept of "relevant."
