Who Makes Electronic Music?: Vocalists, Composers, Gender And Electronic Music Technology, Hannah Bosma

An analysis on how electronic sound technology has altered the roles of the composer and the vocalist. By foregrounding timbre and making permanent the sound of the vocal performance, recorded sound and electronic music have the potential to impact the balance of power between the traditionally male composer and the female vocalist. The article refers to various singers and composers such as La Barbara, Diamanda Galas, and Laurie Anderson to demonstrate the potential impact of sound recordings to alter these gender dynamics. On April 8, 1996, New Langton Arts in San Francisco held a mini-retrospective of Richard Lerman’s work. The event took place in conjunction with the recent Soundculture ’96 Festival. Lerman describes the retrospective’s theme as follows: “All this work has evolved from my explorations using piezo disks to amplify small sounds.” Lerman’s most recent video and stereo sound piece, 'Sonoran Desert Ants' (1996) challenges the shifting in perspective of humans, pairs the sounds of small feet and mechanically transmitted vocalizations with an equally close-up shot of the ants. MUDs were originally used for Role-Playing based games such as Dungeons & Dragons. MUDs have evolved since its origin and other versions have branched off from the original MUDs. They have been developed not only to be used in the gaming community, but further into online communication. It lets users remain anonymous while taking onto an online persona.

Two exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Modern Art, “Metamorphoses: Digital Photography in the Electronic Age” and “Pixel Perfect: Digital Photography in the Bay Area,” both debate whether digital photography is a kind of art based on how people interpret photography. With the advent of powerful computer software such as Adobe’s Photoshop, artists can easily manage their work regardless of whether they want to create collages, adjust the color, add additional layers of images or text, experiment with scale, or transform dreamlike ideas into surreal artworks for public display. An analysis on Martin Heidegger’s perspective on heretical notion of music technology vs. Andrew Feenberg’s instance of subversive rationalization. Heidegger believes that technology should be external to the artist’s work. He furthers this notion by stating that tEchne is crucial to understanding technology.
