Folk Songs Of Ghana: The Mosomagor Song Book, Julia Christensen

This project is focused on the traditional songs of Moscmagor, a village at the Eastern entrance to Kakum National Park. I was interested in learning to sing the songs, the meanings of the songs, as well as their histories and origins. I was also very interested in the singing techniques that are used, and how the singing of the songs is naturally effected by the fact that they have been learned within this oral culture. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of Adowa as a vehicle to express ethnic identity in Asante society. First, background information regarding African music is presented, bringing to light the concept of African music as an integrated, 'total art' and highlighting the distinction between traditional and contemporary African music. Traditional music is discussed in terms of its defining features, continuity through enculturation, and imitation of natural patterns of African speech. The Church Growth Movement relies heavily on the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) for much of its passion and theological foundation. Yet there is confusion among various writers in the movement as to what specifically the command to “make disciples” implies. Dr. Robert Hopper wrestles with this issue in his article “Historical Clarity: Disciple-Making and the Church Growth Movement.”

Frank C. Laubach And The Challenge Of Literary Evangelism, J. Gregory Lawson

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

This article reviews the legacy of Frank Charles Laubach (1884-1970). Laubach pioneered an evangelistic approach often called “literary evangelism” whereby churches taught illiterate peoples to read and thereby witnessed for Christ. This approach has been effectively used on the mission field and may be an effective way to win people to Christ in the urban centers of North America. Laubach believed that a church should teach numerous kinds of illiterates (people groups), i.e., illiterate adults, foreign peoples, school drop-outs, children needing remedial reading, prisoners, and juvenile delinquents. Many of these people groups are found in our cities.

Confederate Matrons : Women Who Served In Virginia Civil War Hospitals, A. Elise Allison

Honors Theses

In September 1862, the Confederate Congress authorized hospitals to employ white women as chief matrons, assistant matrons, and ward matrons. This paper examines the lives and experiences of matrons who worked in Confederate hospitals in Virginia. It concludes that only ''exceptional" women with the stamina to endure physical and mental hardships were able to defy conventional ideas about their proper role and contribute to the care of Confederate sick and wounded as matrons.

Social historians have long suspected that religious convictions made a difference in the sixteenth century, and historians of the late Tudor religious and political settlements have recently emphasized the differences that advanced forms of Calvinism are alleged to have made. They say that religious radicals--puritans and precisianists, to their contemporary critics--were social conservatives who thought wealth was a blessing and poverty a curse. According to Keith Wrightson and David Levine, the "firmly committed Puritans among the yeomen of the parish" promoted a "sense of social distance" between themselves ("the better sort") and the less respectable. My area of ministry is teaching the sophomore religion class at Providence High School. I would like the students to develop a deeper relationship with God. This project will be an attempt to bring these students into a deeper understanding of themselves and their church community. The ultimate goal is that the students will grow spiritually by the grace of God.

This fictional novella takes place during the narrator Smoot's two-year mission to Melbourne, Australia. It chronicles the intertwining of the lives and destinies of three main characters: Smoot, a Utah native who struggles with carnality and lack of conversion and spirituality; Babakian, an Australian convert who used to be a punk rocker and has become frustrated with Mormonism's blandness and conformity; and Samantha, a nonmember part-Tongan Utahn with whom Smoot was involved before his mission. Speaking generally, the novella is about how Babakian misuses his creative powers of art and sexuality, how Samantha explores the gospel and changes her life, …

As he took office, President John F. Kennedy articulated new policies sympathetic to African independence movements, but his policies turned out to be conditional. Aid continued to be granted to resource rich, pro-Western governments.

When the Republic of Congo gamed its independence, it retained its pro-Western cultural and economic ties with its former colonial power, France. Lacking natural resources and an industrial base, this country sought large amounts of economic aid from the West to sustain itself.
