Often overlooked within the standard views of academe lie hidden a number of tacit assumptions. Until the time of Nietzsche, the status of rhetoric as a discourse formation in Western intellectual history was often colored by the unflattering view generated by Plato in a number of his dialogues. In this thesis I present a case that revisits Plato and Nietzsche with an eye toward understanding the reasons why these two highly influential figures in contemporary philosophy adopt the views they advocate. In this manuscript of poems, I seek to address the seeming polarities of sacrifice and excess with respect to the sacred and to show that not only may they co-exist, but that they may actually be viewed as one and the same. With respect to the idea of chaff, the central uniting metaphor of the manuscript, the point I'm working toward is that there actually is no chaff unless everything is chaff--that, in terms of both the inner and outer life, asceticism may have its place, but it should not be looked upon as ''higher" than abundance. Painter And King: Gustav Klimt’S Work At Peles Castle, Lucica Curta

Gustav Klimt's work at Peles Castle, which was unknown until now due to the cultural isolation of Communist Romania, is the focus of this study. Against the background of Carol of Hohenzollern's life and activities as King of Romania (1866-1914), the castle is viewed as playing an important role in forming the King's new identity in his new homeland. The eclectic decoration of the castle reflects Carol's life experience and character. The King represented the best match for Klimt's artistic aspirations at that time.

Dmitri Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of Misenk, has suffered through more social changes than any other work in Russian music history. It brought Shostakovich unprecedented fame, and also brought about his downfall by the Soviet Government The story behind Shostakovich, Lady Macbeth, and the Soviet Government is one of power, as well as the evolution of a nation and how it affected the struggling individual. Here, the artist, his art, the government, and the people are all inextricably linked.

In 1996, I spent four months studying in what was formerly East Berlin. During that time, I met people from across the United States as well as Germany. I made many friends who are either agnostic or atheist. The reasons for these beliefs among Americans were most often based on negative experiences with a church, anger towards God because of various tragedies, or on a misunderstanding of Christianity. In my conversations with citizens of the former East Germany, I discovered that their communist beliefs did not allow them room for loyalty to the Church or even to God; as one …

At the end of Shakespeare's Cymbeline, the villainous Iachimo unravels the sordid details ofhis scheme to convince Posthumus that he has "enjoyed the dearest bodily part of [his] mistress," and Posthumus is struck with the horrible realization that he has commanded the murder ofhis innocent wife (1.4.40-1). Referring to his wife as a "temple / of virtue," Posthumus laments that he has destroyed Imogen's physical body, a holy space that contained a pure and righteous spirit. The Mass for Strings, Winds and Chorus was written with two primary purposes: (1) to produce a complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass utilizing an isorhythmic cantus firmus style, similar to the cantus firmus settings common in the Medieval and Renaissance periods; and (2) to compose this setting in such a manner that it is performable in the environment originally intended for the Ordinary.

The isorhythmic cantus firmus technique of composition was almost exclusively used during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The technique consists of imposing a rhythmic structure upon a common melody (often from plainchant or …

The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a volunteer music therapy program on the self-esteem and locus of control of children survivors of domestic violence residing in a shelter for domestic violence. An experimental group which received music therapy and a no-contact control group were used in this study. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale was used to measure the subjects' selfesteem while the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control scale was used to measure the subjects' locus of control in both groups. My research on scarification took place in Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region of Ghana. By interviewing some of the different ethnic groups in Wa, I came to understand the varying purposes scarification serves. Additionally, I discovered some of the culture beliefs, values and myths of the Wala people. The following report looks into four main aspects of scarification: marks of identification, medicine, protection, and decoration. Furthermore, it investigates the impacts of the slave trade on the practice of tribal marking. Lastly, this paper will describe current opinions and the future implications of the practice of scarification in …
