A Forgotten Enemy: Omaha Encounters The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Gary Gernhart

Influenza, or the flu as it is commonly called, is considered nothing more than a mild physical nuisance that requires little more than bed rest and aspirin. In 1918, however, this acute respiratory ailment elicited a greatly different response from the ordinary citizen. A deadly and highly contagious strain of the influenza virus emerged in 1918 that encompassed the globe in a matter of months. Although the 1918 influenza pandemic killed over twenty-two million people world-wide, of which over seven-hundred thousand were Americans, the deadly pandemic is rarely acknowledged as a catastrophic event. Reconsidering Solidarity In The Mormon Village, Todd L. Goodsell

In what became a classic rural community study, Lowry Nelson concluded in his first Mormon village series in the 1920's that the Mormon village is characterized by an extraordinary sense of solidarity. He claimed that this strong solidarity can be primarily explained by four factors of the social group: leadership, conflict, cooperation, and ideology. After resurveying the Mormon village in 1950, he concluded that solidarity had declined. However, a few problems become apparent to the present researcher looking back upon Nelson's findings. One of them is that Nelson never had a clear definition of solidarity to begin with. Another is …

The purpose of this study was to portray the experiences of African-American tenured female faculty employed within Historically White, public institutions of higher education in Virginia. This study is a portrait of the career paths, teaching experiences, institutional experiences, community and personal activities, work life, and the future of African-Americans. The study focused on personal experiences and provided a grounded recording for other African-American female faculty members employed within comparable institutions of higher education. The interviews also addressed educational preparation, mentoring, expectations, frustrations, difficulties, cultural and collegial experiences. Participants' audio taped responses were transcribed. The role of ideology in the creation of tenth- and eleventh-century Anglo-Saxon visual representations of Anglo-Saxon kings is the focus of this study. This study assesses Anglo-Saxon images in manuscripts and on coins, seals, and textiles produced during the tenth and eleventh centuries. Each image included depicts Anglo-Saxon kings who ruled during the tenth and eleventh centuries. The thesis begins with a discussion of the term ideology and a historical introduction to the political developments in rulership and monasticism that influenced images of kings. The thesis covers each art form separately, examining what evidence exists, what problems exist in dealing …

Genuflect, Gentlemen is a novella-Iength work of fiction in which Dan Mooney, a recovering drug-addict and former rock star, has a religious awakening that inspires him to write a journal as an attempt to find meaning in his past. This journal, a soapbox for Dan’s newly realized philosophies, focuses primarily in his troublesome experiences as a student at an all-boys Catholic boarding high school; it is essentially Dan’s version of the “story” of those years just before his fame when music was replacing religion as the center of his spirituality. The Definition Of Fatherhood: In The Words Of Never-Married African American Custodial Mothers And The Noncustodial Fathers Of Their Children, Jennifer F. Hamer

This qualitative study explores the meaning of fatherhood from the perspective of never-married parents. Specifically, the study describes: how African American custodial mothers perceive the roles and responsibilities of their children's fathers; the extent to which these mothers' perceptions and definitions of noncustodial fatherhood are consistent with those of noncustodial fathers and the dominant cultural "ideal"; and what mothers do to enhance men's paternal participation. A convenience sample of 25 never-married,f ormer couples was drawn from the predominantlyA frican American population of a mid-sized Midwestern city. Data was collected via in-depth interviews with each individual respondent. The findings suggest that …

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The paper describes the combined use of qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a preliminary definition of the construct, the reasons for divorce among Israeli Arab women. The qualitative methods consisted of personal in terviews and a focus group, the quantitative method of Trochim's concept mapping. The combined approach was adopted in the wake of skepticism about the ability of research instruments developed in the West to study Western populations to provide valid and reliable assessments of non-Western groups. My title is somewhat facetious, but not completely. There has been a profound shift in the direction and underlying assumptions of editorial theory and practice during the thirty years in which I have been practicing this craft, and my purpose here is to make some general observations on this topic. I start with a warning, though: most of my comments apply to textual or literary editing, not to documentary editing as it is practiced by literary editors.

In a paper presented at the 1998 annual meeting of the Association for Documentary Editing and published in this issue of Documentary Editing, Michael Stevens discussed advances in the craft, professionalism, and legacy of the field over the past twenty years. The book that he and Steven Burg have written is an example of the interconnections among these advances. For a craft to improve, its practitioners must become more professional and reflective about their practices. For professionalism to develop, a body of knowledge and some degree of consensus about the practice of a craft must be established. And for a …

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is now accepting applications from individuals for its Documentary Editing Fellowships, which provide training in historical documentary editing at projects supported by the Commission. Contingent upon the availability of sufficient Fiscal Year 1999 funds, two fellowships will be awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. The stipend for an editing fellow is $41,250 (includes fringe benefits). Fellowships are for an eleven-month period beginning between August and October 1999. In addition to attending the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents held in June 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin, fellows will have some funds available …
